Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Corsica

Corsica is one of thirteen island regions of France. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the southeast coast of France and west of Italy. Corsica has everything you could possibly want in a region - from glittering calm bays to towering cliffs with rugged hiking - and its all within a short ferry ride from the French mainland.

The easiest and cheapest way to get to Corsica is to take the ferry. Ferries leave from Nice, Marseilles, and Toulin - the high speed ferry departs Nice, however. This will take you around three hours and you arrive in the centre of town. Once you are on the island, you may prefer to hire your own transport as buses don’t leave regularly. If you’re in Italy, you can catch a ferry from Sardinia, Genoa, or Naples.

The main language is French, but locals speak their own language - Corsican - in addition to knowing at least a little bit of French. Some speak Italian, and only a small percentage of the population speaks English. In the summer, Corsica’s population appears to triple, with holidaymakers coming from France and Italy to enjoy the sun and leisure that the island offers. You should book your hostel, flight or ferry, and any tours well in advance in July and August.

Hostels in Corsica can be found in most of the towns; look in the bigger towns like Porto Vecchio or Ajaccio for better results. You can also find hostels in the mountains - these will cater to the hikers doing the G20 trail or another Corsican hiking trek.

Corsica has only been a part of France for the last 200 years, and as a result has a varied history and plenty to see and do. It has been inhabited continuously since the Mesolithic Era - first by Carthaginians, then Greeks, Etruscans, and the Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was invaded by the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, and finally given to the Genoese. There was a period in which they were a free state, but were subsequently ruled by the British and then the French. This amount of history means that there are a lot of museums, fortresses, and historic mountain villages on the island. There are also several national parks and wildlife refuges to visit. Don’t miss the nightlife or the vibrant coastal towns.
