Our handwritten guide on Backpacking England

England -- it's home to one of the most famous cities in the world and yet it harbours so many more surprises around its glorious countryside that so many people miss and don't experience because of the main drawcard that is London. Do yourself a favour! After experiencing London, get out of the city and get among the real England and the real Brits.

The capital city, London, is a great place from which to start your adventures. You could easily spend a couple of weeks here seeing and doing all the crazy and wonderful things that this city has to offer. There are hundreds of England hostels here , some in better areas than others. Do your research on where you want to be, what you want to see, and what the better neighbourhoods are before you book -- and be sure to book in advance, especially during the high season if you want to avoid staying in a total dive.

From London it is quite easy to do weekend trips on the train or the cheaper Megabus or National Express to towns such as Bristol, Bath, Cambridge, Oxford, Southampton, and Brighton. Each has some wonderful and historical things to see and do. The cheapest way to get around however if there are a few of you traveling is by car, however public transport will get you to pretty much anywhere in the country you may want to go. Just keep in mind that the closer to your travel date that you book your trains and buses, the more you are going to wind up paying. If you can manage to book a week or two in advance you will save yourself quite a lot of money. If you can do it over a month in advance, you can score some pretty cheap Megabus deals.

You will literally find England hostels from one end of the country to the other. There are such a large number of them in so many different locations that you shouldn't have trouble finding somewhere to stay either in or close to where you want to be.

Traveling east of London, you will go past the famous Stonehenge on the side of the highway on your way through to Bath and Bristol, which are both great cities to explore -- Bath for its history and Bristol for its up-and-coming music scene. You will also find Stratford-Upon-Avon out this way -- it's where arguably the most famous author of all time, William Shakespeare, was born.

As you travel north, you will find that the culture and the landscape both change. The Lake District is home to some of the most stunning scenery and hiking in the country, and is an area not to be missed if you have some time to spend up here. It is close to the major towns of Liverpool, Manchester, York, and Leeds.

The south coast of England is home to the famous Cliffs of Dover, some amazing coastal hiking, and the hip town of Brighton. You can also catch a ferry here to France.

In the summer months, England becomes a hub of music festivals galore; the most famous of which is Glastonbury. If you are here in the summer, a music festival is a very worthy way to spend your time.

There is obviously way more to this amazing country than can be described in short. The best advice is to get out of London and experience what the rest of the country has to offer, because London has an entirely different culture than the rest of the country. You won't regret it for one second.
