Global Hostel Jodhpur is loved by travelers for its amazing rooftop terrace, which offers unparalleled views over the Mehrangarh Fort. However, the rest of the hostel is average. The paintings of Spiderman and other cartoon characters are a bit infantile and make the place more attractive for a male audience, while the rooms are boring and without much style.
The Location
The hostel is only a ten-minute walk from the Sardar bazaar, which is a market aimed predominantly at a tourist audience. However, the walk between the market and the hostel can be a bit intimidating, as it feels like walking through a slum with a number of children following you and begging for money. However, the Fateh Sagar artificial lake is just in front of the hostel, which is a nice place to walk around in the morning. The two train stations of the city as well as the bus station are around forty minutes on foot from here and most of the attractions can be reached on foot in less than half an hour. An exception is the Umaid Bhawan Palace, where you would have to take a tuk tuk.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers private and dorm rooms alike but it seems to be more popular with guests opting for private rooms. Therefore, a real backpacker vibe is missing. The dorms have bunk beds and lockers but padlocks have to be brought by the guests. The rooms are en suite but the bathrooms are basic and a bit rundown. Toilet paper is provided, though.
Common Spaces
The highlight of the hostel is the rooftop terrace, which is extremely spacious and offers an amazing panorama over the city. It is lit up at night and has a great atmosphere. Food can be ordered here throughout the day even if it is really overpriced. Moreover, there is a huge indoor common area as well with several armchairs, mattresses and chairs. A chess corner, darts, and several board games are available. Three different Wi-Fi networks cater for all three stories of the hostel and offer really fast internet connection.
Summary
All in all, Global Hostel does have its pros and cons. It is not in the greatest neighbourhood, and if you plan to be out a lot in the evenings, you might have some safety issues. While the design is not too exciting, sitting after nightfall on the rooftop and taking in the views of the lit up Mehrangarh Fort will definitely make your stay worthwhile.
