We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Helmsdale.

Around seven hundred fifty people live in Helmsdale, Scotland, a village in the north of the country. It is located on the coast of Sutherland, a county in the Highlands of the country. The airport in Inverness is only around sixty-five kilometres away, but this airport only mainly offers flights to other destinations in the United Kingdom. If you come from abroad and you want to travel the region, Edinburgh Airport (around two hundred twenty miles south of Helmsdale) serves many international destinations, including low-cost airline flights. You can either rent a car or take trains to get to the coastal village in Sutherland. The nature, the wildlife, and the unspoilt rough landscape are the main attractions in the region.

The village is rather small. However, there are some options to spend some lovely days in the area. You can choose from a couple of inns and bed-and-breakfast places. Hotels are available, too. If you prefer the traditional hostel life, you can find a suitable Helmsdale, Scotland hostel in the coastal village too. Most accommodations are small and cosy. Your Helmsdale, Scotland hostel is situated in the centre of the village, only ten minutes’ walk from the train station.

The Emigrants Monument is the a worth-seeing point of interest in Couper Park above the south side of the River Helmsdale. The more-than-three-metre-high bronze statue depicts four figures commemorating the huge numbers of people evicted from their original rural homes during the so-called Highland Clearances in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. From the park, you also have a nice panorama view on the village, the coastline, and the hills in the back country. If you are interested in culture and art, check out the Timespan Heritage and Arts Centre. The building is a history museum and contemporary art gallery. You can also visit a café and a gift shop inside. An audio tour of the museum is available as well.
