Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Normandy

Normandy is a region on the northwestern coast of France, corresponding to the historical region as well as the Channel Islands, which are technically under the British crown (and not part of modern-day Normandy.) Historically, Normandy and England were linked under Frankish rule; Normandy did not become part of France until the 13th century when Prince Phillip wrested control from England’s King John. Henry III gave control back to the French under the Treaty of Paris in 1259. Normandy played a large role in the ending of World War II. For much of the War it was part of German-occupied France and the scene of the famous D-Day invasions by the Allied troops.

Getting to Normandy and travelling through the region is best with your own transportation or by intercity train. Paris is around two hours from Normandy’s main tourist towns. It is also possible to reach Normandy through the UK, int the ports of Le Havre and Caen. The prefecture of Normandy is Rouen, which is also the largest city; other cities include Cherbourg, Le Havre, and Caen. Normandy is mainly rural and agricultural, with the exception of the many Norman towns, medieval settlements, and Second World War historical sites.

Budget hostel accommodation in Normandy is rare. Traditional backpacker hostels are hard to find outside of the major cities in France, so your best bet is to stay at an inexpensive guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Search for the words “de jeune travailleurs” or “de jeunesse” if you prefer a youth hostel.

Once you have your accommodation sorted, head out to explore this ancient, rich region of France. Mont St Michel is one of the region’s most famous attractions. It is a monastic island and pilgrimage site off the coast that was once only accessible at low tide. With the recent addition of a causeway, Mont St Michel is now reachable at all times. You can visit on your own or as part of a tour. Religion played a large part in much of the history of Normandy. There is extensive Celtic Christianity influence in the earlier churches of Cherbourg and the later Gothic cathedral in Rouen is a striking architectural marvel. Recent history buffs will enjoy visiting the sobering WWII cemeteries as well as the beaches where the Allied troops landed. Normandy is also one of France’s gastronomic centres. Calvados, a popular apple brandy, is produced here, as are many ciders. Dairy products are among the most-exported, and cheese from the region is highly regarded worldwide.

A striking, rich, and historical region, Normandy is the perfect place to get away from the bustle of Paris for a few days. Whatever you choose to do here, you will enjoy it!
