Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Aquitaine

Situated in the southwest corner of France, Aquitaine became New Aquitaine on 1/1/16 as a result of the French government deciding to reduce the number of regions from 22 to 13. Known for its beautiful countryside and beaches, Aquitaine is now one of the largest regions in all of France.
There are several important beaches in Antrim including Soulac, Lacanou, Leon and Arachon. Naturists will find family-friendly beaches at Euronat, La Jenny, and Arautchot.

The northwest part of the region is made up of the 24 departments in Dordogne and the 47 departments that are located in Lot et Garonne. This is hilly country known for its old-world charm. Visitors to this region will delight in its historic villages and castles. Perigueux, the region’s capital, is considered an epicurean center. Not to be missed in Perigueux is the Cathedrale Saint Front which is the largest church in Aquitaine.

Lascaux is known for its grotto and prehistoric cave paintings. While it was closed in 1963 to public viewing because of damage that was caused by tourists, there is an exact underground replica nearby. Another tourist attraction in the region is the popular prehistoric theme park, the Park Prehisto, with its 40 lifesize dinosaurs. Persons with disabilities should note that there are over 500 steps in this park.

Situated in the mid part of the region, the seaport town of Bordeaux is best known for its wine production. It is the world’s wine capital. Bordeaux is also known for its preservation of historic buildings. The Water Mirror, the Grand Theater, the Bordeaux Art Gallery, and the Chateau at Beynac are also favorites with visitors to the area. Spectator sports in Aquitaine include football, rugby, basketball and bull-fighting.

Surfers and skiers will all find what they’re looking for in the southern part of the Aquitaine region. The south is made up of Las Landes with 40 departments and the forest region of the Pyrenees Atlantique with its 64 departments. This region is known for its medieval planned Bastide towns whose history goes back to the hundred years’ war between England and France.

Accommodations in the Aquitaine region are plentiful and include luxury hotels, holiday gites, B&B’s, hostels and camping facilities. Hostel seekers may get their best advice regarding quality and price from backpackers in the region. Some of the hostel sites may be remote.
