Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Quebec

Quebec, the French part of Canada, is one of the most stunning provinces in the country. The two major cities here are Montreal and Quebec City, and both have plenty of hostels. Montreal in the south has more English speaking here and is a very open, cultural and fun city to explore. Quebec City in the north has less of an English influence and it feels like you have almost entered a different country. The amazing walled fort around old Quebec City is super fun to explore and they have a great deal of festivals here during summer and winter to get involved with.

Public transport through Quebec is not cheap and not very abundant. Locals use rideshare on websites like Craigslist, or otherwise the best option is to drive if you have access to a car or funds for it so you aren't just stuck in your hostel.

Leaving Quebec City, drive up and explore the Jacques-Cartier National Park, Saguenay and Chicoutimi. Head back down to the river inlet from here and do a spot of whale watching in Tadoussac before catching the ferry from Saint Simeon over to Riviere-du-Loup.

Continue driving towards the Gaspe peninsula and be sure to stop and check out Rimouski, Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, the Gaspésie National Park, Gaspe and the Forillon National Park and the Perce Rock along the way. The national parks along this region are full of wildlife, moose, dear and wildberries. It has an amazing nature to it.

Make sure that you brush up on your French along the way because the further you get out of Montreal, the less English you will encounter. Majority of people in Quebec only speak French outside of the larger cities so you will need this to get by. You will find hostels in most of these towns along the way on your road trip. The people in the hostels will speak English well enough and should be able to help you figure out the best things to do in and around the area.
