Good Hostel
The Backpack is a nice youth hostel. It is located in a good area of Cape Town, so you can easily walk around during the day. At night you should take precautions since Cape Town can be rough. The hostel itself offers a fine kitchen, sandwiches for sale, cooked-to-order breakfast, and reasonably priced bar, among other things.

Fantastic introduction to Cape Town
This was my first time in Cape Town and I'm so glad we stayed at the Backpack. We arrived late in the night and couldn't see the mountain so it was a shock waking up to such a beautiful view in the lobby area! Several little gardens and secret areas to explore at this hostel. Staff was amazingly friendly and helpful. Within walking distance of Long St and several restaurants -- only needed a cab twice or so. Rooms were kept very clean and having a private bathroom was a blessing! Daily pick ups for various tours in the area so you never run out of things to do. Would certainly stay here again and suggest others to do so.

Great place and great value
Visited in April 2012. Well-decorated, calm ambiance, very safe and clean. Staff incredibly helpful with Cape Town excursions and information. Close to Table Mountain and other sights. Seems very classy for a hostel, but isn't more expensive than other places.

visited capetown originally for a couple of days prior to traveling up the coast to joburg, ended up staying for nearly four weeks. its a place i'd love to call home -- overlooking the big mountain, right by long street. you just cant go wrong --
what a place! set the standard for the rest of the trip, the staff are great, food is wicked and the beer at 70 pence a go -- priceless. had a really good time, made at home by the best group of staff and other travelers. at the centre of everything in capetown. reccomend anyone going to south africa to firstly go to cape town and secondly make sure you're booked into the backpack.

I stayed at this place just for a weekend from Friday to Monday. They have several dorm style rooms and some double bed rooms as well. I was amazed by the pool and the included view on table Mountain. Really a good thing to have after a warm day. Beds, rooms, showers and the restaurant are clean and excellent. Internet was available too, but I would recommend to look for some cheaper place. Although it is still cheaper than in Europe, and it's even fast, so you could check everything within 15 minutes (min rate). There was even a little bit of entertainment during my stay. Some of the Irish guys gave a "Nightwalking"-performance during his stay at my dorm room. Well so far so good. Next time when I'm in CPT I will definitely start my trip here. You never who you might meet and continue to travel on with. Greetings from Germany.
