Cannes is one of the best-known cities of the French Riviera, mainly because of the film festival held in the city every May. It is during the Cannes Film Festival that the city gets super busy because everybody is hoping to bump into famous actors and film directors, which is very likely to happen. Cannes is a very expensive little city with an high standard of lifestyle and you can tell it by the amount of very expensive yachts parked at the marina, but you can experience it even on a budget.
There are plenty of things to see and to do without breaking the bank. Apart from the famous Palais des Festivals and the street housing all the expensive shops and the high street boutiques, there are other very nice areas in Cannes. The old town is very pretty, with its little cobblestone streets, stairs, and picturesque architecture -- as you keep walking up the steps, the view over the sea gets better and better. The beaches are beautiful, especially during the low season when they are not crowded with tourists and locals. Because of its location, it's very easy to visit other nice cities and small towns on the coast not far from Cannes, like Nice, which is well connected by regular public buses.
There are plenty of hotels and private properties to be rent; for more budgeted travelers, there are few cheaper options including Cannes hostels that can provide all the usual services offered by hostels plus breakfast and internet access included in the price. Regarding food, there are plenty of restaurants from which to choose, or if you like to make some fresh food by yourself, there is a market (Marché Forville) that's open every day selling fresh vegetables, French cheeses, and more that is definitely worth a visit.
