Let me preface this by saying the location is very nice, clean and comfortable. I booked my stay there in late March for a June arrival. I have a special needs autistic son and wanted a home like atmosphere instead of a motel/hotel even though it was farther away from the city. We were checked in and settled on Tuesday night. I was informed the next morning that a reservation had been placed AFTER ours for "Exclusive Use" of the whole building and we had to leave. The hostel owner said that she would pay "at her cost" a motel in Ayer (8-10 miles further away from her location and farther away from Boston). I had to agree because what else were we supposed to do? I was at her mercy. This "place" her daughter transported us to is a rundown motel with constant train travel, loud traffic noises, and the first night a drunk man tried to get into our hotel room. I also had to rent a car at an additional $200 cost (gas, insurance, and rental rate). We also had no access to a kitchen. My autistic son is so upset! Not to mention this room rents for $50 a night which is far less then what I paid at the hostel!! Update -- when I got back and posted a bad review on her Facebook site I found out that we were lied to. There was not an exclusive party being booked there. They just thought it would be in the best interest of my son to leave because it would be "too overwhelming" to him!

Impersonal and bathrooms not clean at all
I stayed in this hostel for one night. Basically this place is no real hostel at all. It is a conference centre and when this place is not rented for conferences or weddings they rent the rooms to hostelers. But the building is very big and the owner impersonal so you are kind of lost over there, feeling not very welcome. When I was there they were preparing everything for a wedding so I had to leave after one night. I would not like to get married over there as the place was not clean (especially the bathrooms) so I would not like to invite my guests there.
Charming Country Hostel, Friendly Hosts
I really enjoyed my stay here -- comfortable bed, a fan in the bedroom, clean bathrooms, big kitchen with every utensil imaginable, and beautiful gardens. I can only imagine that others had substitute hosts, or maybe one of the manager-owners was just having an unfortunate reaction to cranky guests, because I was treated with courtesy, friendliness, and generosity (I don't have a car so I was picked up by the wife at the train station and taken to the supermarket and back to the hostel with no additional cost).
Lovely Hostel but owner quite unfriendly!
This hostel is beautifully situated in a lovely part of New England. I have been here many times over the years. However I would be reluctant to return as the lady owner can be quite unfriendly and moody. If you catch her on a bad day she will ruin your day by telling you off and/or lecturing you. Sadly this hostel is getting a reputation as unfriendly crossways hostel amongst those who have stayed here.
Friendly? Not really.
I didn't find the Friendly Crossways all that friendly, or clean. There is no sign above the private residence that is attached to the hostel. The owner doesn't like you using this door, and quipped "House" at me as I tried to come inside. She mentioned that many people do this. Well, put up a sign, ok? Shoes are to be taken off, so one can walk on the dirty cement and vinyl floors, or the stain-ridden, worn-out carpet. The coffee pot was a science experiment. Dirty silverware were in the drawers. The bathroom towel had been in place seemingly for weeks or months even, was stiff and gross. The "white" curtains hadn't seen soap in years. There's no air conditioning, so I slept on top of the bed, with just the flat sheet. She didn't like this, and lectured me about having to hand-wash the bedspread. Like she cleans the place. I would not stay here again.
I was in New England in 2000, and stayed here for a few days before driving up to Vermont. The place was fairly empty, it being the start of the off-season. After I was finished in Vermont, I realized I'd have to go back to Littleton for a couple of nights as Boston's hostels were all solidly booked. On calling the Littleton hostel, I was told it was also full. When I remarked that I'd just left the hostel half empty not four days previous, they asked who I was. I told them and they remembered me, and promptly booked me in. And of course, when I arrived, I found the hostel to be yet again half empty. A bit weird really.
Anyway, a perfectly comfortable and friendly stay. Quite off the beaten track but I was driving so it wasn't a problem for me.
This hostel is very interesting. It was spacious, with old farmhouse style. I felt very comfortable here and welcome. It's in a beautiful setting in the country yet easy to get to. Charming. Very clean.
Great hostel...just got back from there. Handmade quilts on all the beds, comfortable area around the fireplace....what a relaxing place - yet not far from Boston.
