Mojo Hotel is a fair choice if you want good-quality accommodation and are not bothered about the self-catering angle. It's very clean and neat, but a little antiseptic. It's located in Sea Point, one of the suburbs of Cape Town with great access to the seafront and plenty of shops. Sea Point is also on four MyCiti bus routes, so it's easy to get around by public transport.
The Location
This huge place is not easily missed! It takes up one whole block on Regent Road between Church Road and Clarens Road. The MyCiti bus routes 114, 109, and 108 stop right outside at the Clarens bus stop. Route 104 stops on Beach Road just a block north on the seafront at Sea Point Pool. There are also minibus taxis running up and down Regent Road to take you to and from the city center and out to Hout Bay.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This is really a smart hotel that offers dorm beds, rather than a genuine backpackers' hostel. The private rooms offering single rooms all the way up to lavish family apartments with kitchenette are really nice, but pricey. The dorm beds are reasonably priced and all the dorms are clean, have very good mattresses and bedding, and have their own bathrooms and communal area. The eight-bed dorm we stayed in had single beds -- no bunks -- and these are on a mezzanine floor above the communal area and bathrooms. There is also a small balcony with a table and chair looking out to the ocean. The mezzanine floor is a little hard to negotiate safely, as there are very low concrete beams to duck under, and one bed has a very low beam immediately above the pillow that is potentially very dangerous.
Downstairs, guests enter the dorm apartment into the communal area. This has just a wooden table and benches for sitting, and the bathrooms lead off from this area. There are three bathrooms with showers and toilets, so there's plenty to go around. There are also eight large storage lockers, big enough for a backpack, and guests need their own padlock for these.
Common Spaces
This is not really a true backpackers' spot, as there are no common spaces to speak of, except the spartan sitting areas in each dorm apartment. There is a small sitting area in the lobby, with comfortable sofas and a TV, but people are coming and going through here, so it's not really a relaxing place. There is a huge roof terrace. Although it's low on places to sit, there are a few, and the views are great and it’s tastefully decorated with greenery.
There are no self-catering facilities here for dorm guests. The private rooms have their own tea station as minimum or even a kitchenette with kettle, toaster, microwave, cooker, and fridge, but Mojo Hotel wants guests to use their huge Mojo Village, which takes up the whole ground floor of the building. Here you will find many small places to eat and a bar with live music during the weekends. The eateries offer a wide range of world foods from Middle Eastern to Asian and Mexican. The free Wi-Fi is fast and available throughout the hotel.
Summary
There are no rough edges here and everything seems to be run like clockwork. It's a little soulless. It's handy for getting around Cape Town in all directions and the dorm prices are pretty competitive.
