Bellingen Belfry Guesthouse YHA Reviews

HI - Bellingen YHA Backpackers Hostel is a well-run hostel within the YHA brand run by a helpful and friendly owner and travelers. It is an older building with an incredible area of patio and sundeck overlooking the local bush. The style is a combination of traditional youth hostel and laid-back backpacker styles set in a somewhat alternative-lifestyle town. It has a good Wi-Fi facility, which is available for a fee.

The Location

The hostel is located in a quiet backstreet of this quiet town of alternative lifestyle and tourism. As it's some distance inland and not on the coastal partying circuit, many travelers overlook it, but if you can spare a couple of days and can sort out one of the infrequent buses, it's well worth the trip to see the historical buildings, which are the core of this town, and chill out on the hostel verandah to take in the bush views.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are spacious, in excellent condition, and beautifully clean; there are spacious individual lockers. There is no air conditioning, but it's an open and breezy place. The shared bathrooms are uni gender and somewhat old, but perfectly clean and the hot water supply does not seem to be a problem. There are also good-sized sinks for hand-washing clothes.

Common Spaces

There are vast areas of decking overlooking the local bush -- they face north, so they get the sun most of the day, but awnings protect guests from the extremes of the sun. There's also an area where, in winter mostly, you can light a fire and ... well, do what you will! The TV/DVD area is an extension of the well-equipped and spacious kitchen, which surely has the largest fridge of any hostel of its size. There's a free pool table, books to read or exchange, and plenty of hostel and travel brochures. There are no problems meeting people in this hostel.

This is a great hostel in a great location run by an experienced and professional owner who makes every effort to help. It's not a partying place and there's no nightlife in the town as such, but there's nothing to stop you having a few beers or whatever well into the night. It's a great place to chill out, see some history, take some walks in the rolling bushland all around, or picnic by the river. It's the sort of place where there will always be a few guests who hang on for a while, enjoying all that the hostel and location has to offer. It is well worth a visit when passing along this stretch of the New South Wales coast.

Australia (and UK)

Great hostel. Lovely people, great town, fantastic location, good facilities. I couldn't think of any improvements. I'm currently planning my next holiday there.

great -- the real australia, the people from Oz experience were a real pain though, but then they were dragging suitcases so they couldnt really say they were backpackers could they? always complaining and wanting to be entertained, still the rest of us all had a good time. dont be fooled, this place is great. a piece of little australia. went to the rainforest, saw some platypus. just a cute little critter that swims in the river. went with some german and dutch girls to this nude beach. whoa, me the only guy -- whoa, total boner. so embarrassing. drank beer in an ozzie pub with aforementioned backpackers.

I worked for accommodation at this hostel for two months and it was probably the best two months of my life. I went travelling for nine months and this was the best place I went. I love it. Don't leave without doing the rope swing!

Bellingen is really boring. There is nothing to do whatsoever. I only stayed here one night because we had to with Oz Experience. The fluffy chickens are really cute, though. The accommodation is ok.

I loved it here. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings, very mellow, chilled out atmosphere. I only meant to stay a couple of days, and ended up there three weeks. It loses a star, as I would have liked it to have more hammocks. Other than that, a lovely place!

This is one of the worst hostels I stayed at in Australia. I came here on a stop with the Oz Experience bus, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have stopped, that's for sure. There's not much going on in this town. We did do a nice night canoeing trip that was organized at the hostel. As for the accommodation, a group of us ended up getting put in another facility because there was no more room in the main building. We ended up finding out that we were sleeping above the bar across the street. Not a fun experience. I complained to the staff about the fact that we were unhappy with the accommodation and that we were paying the same as people in the main building. They didn't care, and I was not too impressed. Good luck!

Bellingen is one of the most alternative towns along Australia's east coast, and the Bellingen YHA Backpackers is no exception. While the hostel offers standard dorm rooms, doubles and singles, it has a unique set of open-concept rooms that overlook a scenic forested area. Difficult to describe, these rooms are similar to a veranda and they overlook the Bellingen River. Privacy can be maintained however, by pulling the sheet/curtain across the open-faced side. (Do you know what an aircraft hangar looks like?)

In addition to these unique rooms, the walls inside the hostel are covered top to bottom with artistic photographs of what I would describe as "tastefully naked people" (apparently taken at the local nude beach). You may also buy fresh eggs from the resident chickens ($0.30 each on an honours policy), and to top it off, as with most alternative accommodations, dogs seem to wander around the premises.

Conveniently located just off of the main street, the hostel is close to grocery stores, bottle shops, pubs, and cafes. As previously described, the rooms are conceptually unique and are otherwise clean. The hostel has a TV lounge, a small kitchen and two funky outdoor patio areas - one with a pool table. The main drawback is the limited number of toilets and showers for the number of guests staying there. While I am not sure what the maximum capacity is (likely 30-40 people), everyone shares the same two toilets and two showers.

The guests are a mixed bag between working travellers, hippie-types, and people travelling the Oz Experience bus. Day-trips are offered to the nude beach and for rainforest walks. All and all, a very friendly chilled-out hostel.

Bellingen YHA is one of Australia's most laidback backpacker hostels. It's a beautiful and homely YHA set amongst beautiful country! Relax on the hostel balcony overlooking the river and rainforest gardens. Take a tour to Dorrigo National Park, canoe on the river or explore Bellingen village with its great cafes, shops and monthly markets. Hostel accommodation is in twin/double and multi-share rooms.
