Tui Lodge Reviews

Tui Lodge is a really good hostel. It has amazing common areas, only the beds could use a quality upgrade.

The Location

Tui Lodge is located a bit outside of Coromandel Town, but the town is still within walking distance. The road is well signed and there is a big green sign for Tui Lodge on the road. In addition, there is a sign on the building, so you cant really miss it. There is a big parking lot on the property. The building itself is a maze of rooms, bathrooms, and common rooms. It might take some time before you know your way around.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Tui Lodge offers private rooms and dorms of different sizes. The dorms are quite big and very clean and have bunk beds. The mattresses are thin and not very comfortable and the beds are a bit squeaky. Bed linen is included and extra blankets are available for cold nights. There are a few plugs in each room, but there are no lockers available. There are several bathrooms located in the building. They are all extremely clean and very spacious. The showers have hot water and there are enough hooks to hang up your clothes.

Common Spaces

The hostel has several common areas, in addition to a big garden. There are two fully equipped kitchens, offering a stove, oven, microwave, toaster, fridge, and freezer. Each kitchen also has a dining area and free seasonal fruit is available. In addition to the dining areas, there is a TV room and lots of spaces to sit outside. The kitchens/dining areas are open until 10 p.m. You are welcome to sit a bit longer outside, there is a covered terrace. There is also a small playground for children on the big grass plain and there is even a small sauna outside (available for a fee). This is a quiet and relaxed hostel and the big kitchen makes it easy to meet other travelers. Washing machines (cold water only) are available for free. Wi-Fi is paid. The hostel also offers several trips/shuttles, but not every day, so it is best to ask for the program.

Tui Lodge is a hostel with really good and clean facilities. The functional common areas and some nice extras (like the free fruit), make this hostel an amazing place to spend a few nights.

In December 2005 I was here during my bike holiday to celebrate Christmas. It was really fantastic. Besides all people were so relaxed, friendly, and open, the lord organized a really good Christmas meal. In this hostel, you are not an individual but part of the group. Nevertheless, even if you do not like to participate in any conversation, it is fine too. It is a good place to rest for a while, to enjoy the Coromandel Ranges, to make nice cycle tours of walkings. I can really recommend this place.

My friend and I stayed here for over two weeks and on the whole everyone was so lovely and generous! We did a bit of work around the house to pay for our tent site because we were short on money. It really seemed to be our home for a while. Lovely people!!!

Tui Lodge is situated on Whangapoua Road, on the outskirts of Coromandel Town. Look for the wooden carved Tui at the entrance. The lodge is set in a quiet semi-rural location with rambling gardens and orchard including a wide variety of fruit trees.

Accommodation is appointed in two main builings and includes dorm rooms, share rooms, double rooms and ensuite rooms with own bathrooms. We have two kitchens with all necessary appliances. There are four bathrooms inside the buildings and one located outside in the orchard/camping area. This bathroom is adjacent to our caravan and is only available if the caravan is not being used.

There is a lounge room for all guests in the chalet building and a dining area that also has two washing machines for guest use in the front building. We also have a gazebo which has many lounge chairs and a large table for communal use. There are many board games, sporting items and a table tennis table also located in the gazebo.

We have a BBQ for outdoor cooking, a fish cleaning area with running water and bench with sink.

Bikes are free to use. We charge a $20 deposit which is refunded when the bike, helmet and padlock are returned. There are many places to ride around the township of Coromandel, much of which is very level ground.
