Hostel YHA Dartmoor is a superb location from which to explore the expansive moorland of Dartmoor National Park either by foot, bike, or car.
It's located at Bellever, which is signposted from Postbridge on the B3121 running through the park. While somewhat remote, this is a national park, and a renowned walking location and most people that come here are ready to explore. There are trails starting from right outside the door making it a good spot to get out into Dartmoor.
Rooms and Bathrooms
While modern with clean bathrooms and good facilities, the rooms here are a little cold and cheerless but have everything you needed. There is a variety of accommodation here from single-sex male or female rooms to private rooms accommodating four, five, or six people. Some of the private rooms had double beds with a single bunk above them. The rooms and bathrooms are communal. The water is hot and the facilities are clean.
The spacious and well-appointed kitchen has a fridge, cooking utensils, pots and pans, and even a "free food" area that can cater for everything you need. You can also book in to get one of the hostel's meals at breakfast or dinner if you don't want to self cater. There's a comfortable lounge as well with a fireplace, games, and books that's a good place to relax at night and meet and chat to other guests. They even have Wi-Fi here -- simply pay a small fee and you get the code for the duration of your stay -- although there does not seem to be mobile coverage.
Hostel YHA Dartmoor has a really nice, rustic atmosphere and was once part of a Duchy Farm. Dartmoor ponies can sometimes be seen grazing outside, although you're bound to run into them somewhere during your visit to Dartmoor. The Bellever Forest is right outside the door and the hostel provides walking itineraries if you wish to explore there. There are lots of walks in Dartmoor exploring the rugged tors and wild landscape of the park. There are also some fascinating Neolithic and Bronze Age remains and settlements to uncover. Take wet weather gear wherever you venture -- the weather can be very changeable. The hostel has an effective drying room for anything that gets a bit sodden during your daytime exploration.
