Riding Fool Hostel is a great hostel to explore the Comox Valley with optional tours and pick up to visit Mt. Washington for skiing and mountain biking. There are also summer and winter package deals, including tickets to Mt. Washington.
The hostel is located in small-town Cumberland, which is in Comox Valley, just a few kilometers out of the larger town of Courtney. It is a great location to base yourself during summer or winter, as there are many outdoor activities going on all year round. There is a grocery store just minutes away from the hostel. It is a little harder to get to without transport, as you would need to catch a public bus from Courtney if you arrive by train or Greyhound -- otherwise, it is easy to find if you have your own transport.
Rooms and Bathrooms
You have the option of staying in dorm rooms or privates at Riding Fool. Dorm rooms range from a very large, spacious twelve-bed dorm to a smaller, six-bed dorm. The beds are comfy, although the upper bunks are really high and dont have any safety rails. Dorm rooms also have quite large lockers, individual reading lamps, and you can hire towels. There are also private double rooms if you want more privacy. There are four bathrooms each with its own toilet and shower; as the hostel is quite small, you usually dont have to wait.
The common space at Riding Fool is huge and gives you plenty of options to entertain yourself, including a pool table and board games, and socialize with others. Although there is no TV, you do have access to free Wi-Fi throughout the hostel. The kitchen is also very well equipped, with two ovens, a large fridge, and microwave. It is a fairly social hostel, although when we stayed here, it was pretty quiet in the middle of April; we imagine that during high season, it would be a very fun hostel. There is also a quiet sitting area if you want to stay away from the common room, which has a cute and comfy rocking chair and couches.
This hostel has one of the best common rooms we've seen and is super clean, making it the perfect place to stay to explore Comex Valley or just to stop off on the way to Western and Northern Vancouver Island.
