New Taipei City covers a large area outside the boarders of central Taipei, including Keelung, Wulai, and a portion of Yangmingshan Mountain. The area is diverse and very large, since it includes the entire northern tip of Taiwan, excluding the small central area of Taipei City. It includes mountains, beaches, and hot springs as well as hiking, surfing, and tea plantations.

There are a variety of New Taipei City hostels, and the prices will depend on the area you visit -- the prices of hostels in New Taipei City will be lower than those in central Taipei. If you want to get a cheaper and more local view of Taipei City, you could stay in a hostel just across the river in New Taipei in the Xindian or Yonghe districts. These areas are still very convenient to places of interest in Taipei City and easily connected by MRT or bus, however you will find more local markets, cheaper food, and fewer tourists. Since Taipei has become such an expensive city, staying in a hostel in New Taipei City is a great option.

If you keep heading south, you can explore the natural hot springs and hiking trails in Wulai. It is easy to reach by MRT and bus from Taipei City. On the opposite end of Taipei City once you pass Beitou, you will find beautiful views and tranquil scenery. Although there are not many hostels in this area, it makes a great day trip. You can rent bikes and ride along the river all the way to the Danshui Lover’s Bridge for sunset then take the MRT back down to Beitou for a soak in the hot springs. You can spend an afternoon on beautiful beaches if you take a bus further past Danshui/Tamsui. New Taipei City offers a chance to escape the crowded city and explore local life and nature, whether you enjoy biking or hiking, oceans, or hot springs.
