Get to know Zug (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Zug.

Zug is a small, German-speaking town in central Switzerland, on the northeast shore of Zug Lake. Since the town is not located far from the major hub of Zürich, it is easily reachable with public transport. As expected, Zug hostel options are very slim, so simply look near the train station. There, you have a good starting point to explore the town, either on foot or with local buses. You can begin by taking a walk through the charming old town, which nicely combines Middle Age architecture with modern shops. Some buildings that certainly deserve your attention are the late Gothic town hall, Zug Castle with a historical museum, over-fifty-metre high Clock Tower, St. Michael's Church (the largest church in the town), and Powder Tower from the early sixteenth century with well over two-metre-thick walls, just to name a few.

If you are feeling a little bit more adventurous, you can continue by climbing a thousand-metre-high Zugerberg mountain, swim in the lake, go mountain biking, visit one of the many recreation grounds, or check out the beautiful Höllgrotten Caves. Another thing the town is known for are the gorgeous sunsets over the lake, which are considered among the prettiest in the world.

While Zug is a quite small town, it is well worth visiting, as it offers plenty to see. And in case you are visiting in late November or December, you will have a chance to admire the magnificent Christmas market with ice skating rink and numerous stalls.
