Tossa de Mar, a seaside town in the comarca (county) of Selva, Catalonia, was previously known as Tossa. Because of its location, it was officially renamed as Tossa de Mar, or Tossa of the Sea.
Like many towns in Catalonia, Tossa de Mar has a long history that dates back to the Neolithic period. Ancient Iberian tribes and Roman conquerors have settled in the town. Since then, the town has always been populated.
Among the most popular tourist attraction in Tossa de Mar is the archeological site of a Roman villa found in Ametllers. Most of the association of Tossa de Mar to the Roman Empire are found in this villa, like mosaics, a spa, spoons, utensils, fishing hooks, and other domestic and agricultural artifacts of the everyday Roman life.
After the fall of Roman Empire, monarchy and Christianity took over Tossa de Mar. Most of the remnants of these times are evident in the medieval architecture and remains of the town. Examples of its medieval past are the extant Chapel of Saint Sebastian, the Walls of Old Town, battlements, a castle, and an old hospital.
Traditionally, the town mostly lived in fishing and agricultural product. The quiet seaside life of Tossa de Mar continued throughout the centuries until it became a popular tourist destination during the fifties. Since then, Tossa de Mar has continued to grow as a holiday attraction. The economy of present day Tossa de Mar is dependent upon tourism. Tossa de Mar is suitable for tourists and visitors who want to relax on its pristine beaches and resorts or to visit the archeological and ancient structures of the town.
