Where to stay in Lodz on a budget

Lodz is the third largest city in Poland and a capital of the province with which it shares a name. It is located in the center of Poland -- about one hundred twenty kilometers southwest of the capital, Warsaw.

The origin of the name of the town (Lodz translates to "boat") is disputed. Some assumptions state that the name of the city comes from the small river Łódka ("small boat"), but they have not been proven so far. Lodz was first mentioned in the middle of the fourteenth century as a small village and remained a populated place without large significance for many years and even around the beginning of the nineteenth century, its population was under two hundred people. Things rapidly change with the Industrial Revolution as the city became “the Polish Manchester” and a main center of the textile industry.

Today, Lodz is a modern city with many things to see and visit, such as Piotrkowska Street, the Muzeum Sztuki (Museum of Modern Art), the Centralne Muzeum Włókiennictwa (Textile Museum), and the Muzeum Tradycji Niepodległościowych (Museum of Independence). It is still a major industry center and also a center of Polish cinema, with many films produced here. Lodz was a city with a German majority only about a century ago; it was an important city during the Communist era, and now is one of the major cities in democratic Poland.

Like many other big Polish cities, there are many hostels in Lodz. Most of them are located in the city center, but you can find Lodz hostels in almost any part of the city. Most Lodz hostels offer great facilities at even greater prices so you can easily find a nice place to stay. Of course, there are exceptions, so be careful what you book as you have plenty of great options for Lodz hostels. Lodz has a good transportation system and you can easily reach the train and railway stations and the airport.
