Kumara, New Zealand, is located on the South Island of New Zealand. It is part of the West Coast, one of the most remote areas of the country. Only around thirty-two thousand people permanently live in an area of more than twenty-three square kilometres. The wild coastline, the scenic mountains, and the unspoilt nature make the region a perfect destination for tourists looking for relaxation, outdoor sports, and panoramic views. World famous points of interest such as Franz Josef Glacier and Hast Pass are the highlights of the West Coast, which is called Te Tai Putini in the Maori language.

Kumara is a small village with only three hundred inhabitants. The geographic location makes it interesting for tourists who want to explore the West Coast. If you are on a road trip, it is a suitable place for a stopover. The village was founded in the late nineteenth century. It is also the hometown of Richard Seddon, who was the Prime Minister of New Zealand at the turn of the twentieth century.

Kumara is very small. Thanks to the growing tourism industry on the South Island, you can find some hotels and guesthouses; your options for a Kumara, New Zealand hostel are limited. As you probably expect, a hostel in Kumara, New Zealand, is not a party place. Most tourists visiting the area come for the scenic nature. If you look for party hostels on the South Island, check out Queenstown. If you are flexible and you want a bigger supply of hotels as well as hostels, check out the nearby town of Greymouth.

It is very recommendable to explore the region around Kumara by car. This gives you the opportunity and flexibility to react to sudden weather changes. Arthur's Pass is a one-hour drive from Kumara. It is the name of a town, but mostly used as general term for the Arthur's Pass National Park. The terrain is mostly wild and mountainous and is perfect for nature and picture enthusiasts. The panorama can be simply breathtaking. Mountaineering, hunting, and skiing is available in the park. Embedded in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, Franz Josef Glacier is one of the biggest attractions of the West Coast. Around two hundred fifty thousand visitors come to this glacier every year. Guided as well as unguided walks onto and up to the glacier are possible.
