Bay of Plenty is a large bay, with more than just over two hundred fifty kilometers of coastline. It is situated on the North Island of New Zealand, between the Coromandel Peninsula and Cape Runaway. This bay is also characterized by the many islands that you can see from the coast. You'll find a lot of sandy beaches in Bay of Plenty, but the west part of it is mainly a rocky shore.
Bay of Plenty is the best spot to enjoy summer in New Zealand, here you'll have good weather during the summer, and temperatures above the average of the country. The nice beaches are the main attraction here -- this bay is a common destination for the locals from the North Island -- but paddling a canoe or a kayak into the sea is something really worthwhile. Some of the islands also deserve a visit -- don't miss the active volcano Whakaari (the perfect place to spend a day -- but prepare yourself for the smell of sulfur that will be really intense). There are a few other nice islands, and you should ask advice from the locals to see which one suits better what you're looking for in terms of adventure, wildlife, forest -- you name it.
It's really easy to get to Bay of Plenty. If you are coming from Auckland by bus or car, don't miss the views of the Coromandel Peninsula along the way. There will be plenty of coaches linking Tauranga -- the main city and the biggest in Bay of Plenty -- to the other big cities.
You'll have plenty of hostels in Bay of Plenty, but the main place for you to settle should be Tauranga. From here you'll be able to explore the rest of the region easily. Bay of Plenty hostels are nice, but expect higher prices in summer. You'll find good facilities and good quality hostels in this area.
