Agrigento, Sicily, Italy, is a city located on the southern coast of Sicily. Around sixty thousand people call Agrigento their home. It is internationally well-known for the Valley of Temples, a cluster of monumental Greek temples. Nowadays, the buildings are partially restored and a true tourist magnet. Apart from the very important tourist industry, agriculture plays a big role for the local economy. Nevertheless, as in many regions of Southern Italy, the unemployment rate is extraordinary high. The area covers over more than a thousand hectares, where the remains of seven Greek temples can be visited. All temples are designed in Doric style. The Temple of Heracles is the most ancient; it was destroyed by an earthquake and nowadays, there are only eight columns left. The best-preserved temple is the Temple of Concordia. The building is classified as one the most remarkable buildings of the Greek civilization existing today. It is also well worth visiting the Archaeological Museum and the Church of Santa Maria dei Greci, built in the thirteenth century, in the centre of the city.
