Hafnarfjordur (Hafnarfjörður), Iceland, is a suburb about twenty kilometres south of Reykjavik city centre and about a half-hour drive to the airport further south. The options for hostels in Hafnarfjordur (Hafnarfjörður), Iceland, are extremely limited, and there is not a great deal to do here otherwise. Other than a nice park down the road from a Hafnarfjordur (Hafnarfjörður), Iceland hostel, the entire area has a very industrial feel. It is, however, a great location from which to start your Icelandic adventure if you have managed to hire a car from this area that is cheaper than many of the others in Reykjavik.
To get to Hafnarfjordur you have two options. The Flybus stops here on its way to and from the airport. If coming from the airport, you can book your ticket on the bus. If you are going back to the airport from Hafnarfjordur, then it is a good idea to book your bus through Reykjavik Excursions Flybus online so that they know to stop and pick you up. If you are wanting to head to downtown Reykjavik, you can take the number one bus from the main road and it takes approximately twenty minutes to get there. You can ask at your Hafnarfjordur (Hafnarfjörður), Iceland hostel for advice on public transport, but the closest bus stop at the time of writing is outside of the Kronan supermarket.
To get cheap groceries, you cannot go wrong with the Kronan. Food can be quite expensive in Iceland and some supermarkets are more expensive than others. Kronan and Bonus are the two cheaper supermarkets and if you buy your food here you should save some money.
Just off the main road here is a business called Kuku Campers. They have some of the best deals in town for camper vans in which you can sleep, if you plan on driving the ring road. They are not located in downtown Reykjavik or at the airport, so if you book one of these vans, it is best to stay in Hafnarfjordur to pick up your van and get organized. They are also next to a Go Campers rental place, which you can check out as well.
