Bonao is a small town in the Dominican Republic that is often overlooked in favor of more popular, nearby destinations like Santo Domingo. However, the town is far more than a quick rest stop on a tour of the country. It is located in the hills and has a booming local culture filled with artists and talented people. The natural beauty of the city makes it a very attractive place to visit.
Hostels in Bonao are usually nestled in the hills around the city. These hostels are varied in their pricing, although they are mostly quite affordable. Waking up in the hills is an experience worth staying in one of the hostel. From here, you can set out to explore the local countryside, including the Blanco River and the waterfalls near it.
One way to enjoy the natural beauty of the place is to take a tour of the ecological reserves around the Blanco River. Hostels are available at the Complejo Ecotouristico Rio Blanco, which is about seventeen miles from the main city. Hiking and trekking trails are available through the thick forest, where you can see many species of birds, local flora and fauna, and a variety of pine and palm growing together.
Another great way to look at nature in Bonao is to visit the Monumento Natural Saltos de Jima. These, the Jima waterfalls, are accessible after hiking through a tropical forest. You can stay here and birdwatch or swim in one of the natural pools. Remember, though, no littering is allowed here, as the region is a part of a scientific reserve.
Finally, you can check out the Santos de Paolo, an art exhibition where many local sculptors display their products. You can visit their workshops and buy their work if you want to. Located on the highway, it is a close distance to the many large restaurants in the city.
