Split is the second largest city in Croatia, although once you are there it will feel pretty compact. All of the major sights (with exception of the soccer pitch) are located right on the coastline, most of them within the confines of the harbor area. Split's train station, bus terminal, and ferry landing are all within steps of each other, making getting in, out, and through Split very easy.
Upon arrival in Split you will be overwhelmed by people with offers of apartments and rooms. Although it is possible to negotiate a deal here, you will not know where you are staying until the deal is closed. Stories of dirty rooms, far off apartments, and bedbugs are common. It is best to book ahead.
Over the last several years Split has become very backpacker friendly with many hostels setting up shop.
