The municipality of Darien, Colombia, is located by Calima Lake (in Spanish, Lago Calima). Around fifteen thousand people live in the town, which belongs to the department Valle del Cauca in the west of Colombia. In this area, the biggest economical factor is agriculture. Coffee, sugar cane, soy, and cotton are produced in large quantities. However, Darien is well known for the excellent opportunities to do water sports and the main attraction and reason for most tourists to come to Darin is Calima Lake. The steady and strong winds all year round make Lake Calima an excellent spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. If you are a bit less sporty but you want to have some fun in the water, book a boat trip or try out one of the banana rides. Horse lovers can book some tours and experience on horseback the untouched nature around the lake.
Additionally, some cultural festival take place in the town and nearby. It is less than a hundred kilometres from Cali, and Buga is only forty-five kilometres away. The easiest option to get to Darien is by car, but bus services from Cali to Calima Lake are available as well.
The temperatures in Valle del Cauca are quiet constant. Visitors can expect maximum temperatures ranging from twenty-five to thirty degrees. At night, the temperatures can drop to seventeen degrees Celsius. However, the constantly warm climate enables the tourists to do watersports on the lake all year round.
Darien is not particularly big, but thanks to Calima Lake, there is a growing demand of accommodations such as Darien, Colombia hostels, guesthouses, and hotels. You can also book private villas and go camping. Most hotels have two or three stars. The quality is all right, but do not expect large, fancy resorts.
