Hostal Cafe Tiana is relaxed and comfortable, and a great place to hang out and recharge your batteries before heading to your next adventure, as Latacunga is a great middle ground to explore Cotopaxi or hike the famous Quilotoa loop.
The Location
Hostal Cafe Tiana is located only a few steps from Latacunga's central square, which is a nice place to walk around, but you won't find much to do. The main benefit of being in Latacunga is that you're centrally located to both Quilotoa and Cotopaxi and the hostel offers trips to both.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms at Tiana are very large; most are separated into a downstairs room with a two-bed loft upstairs. They range from eight- to ten-bed rooms. The beds are comfortable, but the pillows are a joke. The hostel also gets quite cold at night, but the beds are warm enough.
The bathrooms in the dorms are clean and well stocked with toilet paper and hand soap, although no hand towels or floor towels are provided. The showers have hot water twenty-four/seven, but the upstairs showers do not seem to heat as quickly or as strong as the downstairs ones.
There is a large and well-stocked kitchen at the hostel that is free for guest use after breakfast hours end at 10 a.m. There is plenty of fridge space as well; the hostel has three for guest use. The hostel includes a simple breakfast of two pieces of nice bread, a banana, coffee, tea, jam, and butter. There is complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day, which is perfect for lounging around and reading in the patio.
The Wi-Fi is off and on -- it's sometimes very fast, but often slow. At nighttime when everyone is on their phone before bed, it can be very slow.
If you need to store your bags while you're out and about, the hostel is happy to do this and will give you one free day and charges a small per-day fee after that.
Common Spaces
There are some great common areas at Tiana. On the first floor, there is a large back patio attached to the kitchen where guests eat breakfast and can lounge during the day. There is also a TV located in this area. There is supposed to be Wi-Fi on the patio, but it is temperamental at best.
On the top floor, there is a set of steps that leads guests out to the roof for spectacular views of the city and a great view of the sunset as well. If you're lucky, you might even get to peep through the next-door gym's windows and see people rocking out at Zumba classes.
Hostal Tiana also offers luggage storage to guests and non-guests in an underground area with twenty-four/seven security cameras for a per-day fee; the first day is free for guests.
As Latacunga is typically a city where people are gearing up for some intense adventures, there's not much of a party scene, although the hostel does sell beers at reception.
Summary
Hostal Cafe Tiana is a great and affordable spot in Latacunga to make your base for exploring the Cotopaxi and Quilotoa areas. You'll find yourself in a comfortable (although cold) hostel that's attractive and is a perfect place to stretch and prepare for the next adventure.
Note -- One of the ladies that works at the front desk is infamous and comes off as very rude and uninviting when you enter the hostel. Just let her do her thing and she'll warm up to you eventually. It's not the greatest vibe to give off at reception, however.
