Wombats City Hostel - Berlin

The Hostelz.com Review

Wombats City Hostel - Berlin is a great place if you are looking for accommodation in a central location, but it’s more like a chain restaurant than a small unique gem, so if you’re looking for character and a smaller environment, this may not be for you.

The Location

Wombats has a great location and is just a block from the Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz metro stop. It is in a good neighborhood with easy access to tourist and nightlife activities.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are extremely clean and the furniture seems new or well kept. There are bathrooms attached to each of the dorms, which tend to have less than ten beds. This may make it harder to access a bathroom during peak hours, but keeps them in general cleaner.

Common Spaces

This hostel has plenty of common areas. The main lobby has a lounge vibe with tables and chairs as well as a beanbag lounge area. There is a private computer area with several computers, a public kitchen for guest use, and a reasonable restaurant all attached to the main lobby. There is also a rooftop bar with a good view and upon check-in you get a free drink. The website has great pictures and panoramic views of the rooms and common areas that are pretty close to the actual experience -- minus the expected clutter from other guests. The benefit of a big chain hostel is that the rooms and common areas are very well kept.

There is no free breakfast, but for a reasonable price, you get an all-you-can eat buffet with slightly more options than your ordinary hostel fare.

Before you check-in and on the day you checkout, there is a luggage room that is locked with entry requested at the front desk. There are no lockers in the luggage room so while you know they are monitoring who goes in, there is no guarantee as to what comes out with them. Overall, however, it feels safe leaving your non-valuables in this room. In the dorms there are lockers.

Overall, while not offering the character of a smaller, independently-owned hostel, Wombats can provide pristine amenities, lots of guests to mingle with, and a great location (not to mention, a free drink!). Overall, we give this hostel four stars out of five.

Would stay here again
Clean and has an awesome rooftop bar. Staff was helpful. Location was not great but Berlin is very large and not really the hostel's issue. Also understood unexpected train issues (refugees in Budapest) and did not charge me for the day that I could not make it even though I let them know the day of.

Great place.
The location is great, near the S and U2, and just 15 minutes walk to Museum Island. Room is clean, big, and with en suite bathroom. The breakfast is ok. But there is not so much social atmosphere. There is no chess or book in so-called common room. Actually it is just a open area with some sofa, much more like a place for rest. And a bar on 7th floor, it's crazy and noisy so better to avoid staying in the 6th.
Fun if you're going out on the town, but is otherwise loud -- next to a main road. The beds are comfy.
Great hostel
Clean, modern with helpful staff. Ideal location close to the u-bahn to explore berlin. with many bars and restaurants close by.
Perfect hostel!!! Best hostel ever!!! There is safety measure on each floor so there aren't strange people walking near your room, just people who have rooms on the same floor as you. We get a free glass of wine or beer at the first day, and we can spend amazing time at the bar. The localization is perfect: by the U-Bah station, close of restaurants, just a few blocks from Alexanderplatz ... so at the first day I just walked to enjoy the many things were near by. The room and the bathroom were very clean, organized ... I have nothing to complain. The principal is the staff ... they are just awesome, very friendly, very helpful. Denis, this guy is cool -- helped us a lot! Perfect hostel!!!!!! I really really really recommend this hostel!!!!!
This hostels has pretty much everything you ask for. Location, location, location. Wombats is by the U-Bah station Rosa-Luxembourg (East Berlin), which is near Alexander Platz, which is downtown and has clubs (Weekend!) and plenty of history. Very clean and modern. Helpful staff. Good bar upstairs with rooftop. We had tons of fun in Berlin and Wombats was a great base. We will come back.
Not as good as other Wombats Hostels.
Having stayed at Wombats Hostel in Munich, I was hoping the Wombats Berlin would be as awesome as Munich was. Unfortunately it was the exact opposite. Dont get me wrong, the rooms were great. But it was severely lacking in Atmosphere. The bar was very boring and the place as a whole was very very quiet and I found some of the reception staff to be quite standoffish. Was definitely more like a hotel. We checked out of this Hostel after two nights and went and stayed somewhere else nearby.
Wombat's City Hostel Berlin is the place to go if you're on a budget and hoping for the most bang for your buck. It's got friendly staff and fellow backpackers, great location, and clean rooms and bathrooms. The Location Wombat's is conveniently located near the U-bahn station Winmeisterstr (metro) and the slightly further AlexanderPlatz, which can be reached by the U-bahn as well as quite a few buses. Just head north along Alt Schonahauser-Str if you alight at the former, or west along Munz Str. first if you're alighting at the latter. You should get the hang of it after a few trips. We walked mostly from AlexanderPlatz as it is a lot more accessible (and also easy to recognize -- stop when the TV tower appears nearby). You can't miss it! Rooms and Bathrooms Since Wombat's is a relatively new hostel, everything is remarkably clean. Two lifts ferry people up and down the seven floors. They use high-tech cards that you scan to unlock doors and to unlock your personal locker. This can fit a small-sized luggage bag and hang some clothes if desired. (Hangers not included). Double-decker beds are used in the shared dorms with sufficient space for a small table and little stools. Big windows facing the street allow sufficient ventilation while curtains provide privacy if required. The six-person room comes with a private bathroom that is surprisingly clean. A well placed shower curtain ensures the floor should stay dry, and hot and cold water are freely available. Common Spaces There's a sitting area at the reception for you to utilize the free Wi-Fi as well as about six computers available for guests to use for a small fee. Connected to this is a well equipped kitchen and an outdoor seating area. On the other end is an adjoining cafe where you can buy breakfast. Luggage storage is located within sight of the reception area. Smoking is not allowed in the building. Maybe due to its name, the majority of Wombat's is filled with friendly, fun loving Aussies, although there are people from everywhere else in the world as well, all equally friendly and social. The highly popular Wombar located on the rooftop is a good place to find some of them if they seem to be absent from the rooms till the wee hours of the morning. Summary From the moment you step in, the friendly receptionists will set the tone for your stay till the time you step out. Wombat's is a wonderful place to stay in and it seems to be attracting all the right people. With numerous pubs and cafes nearby, as well as the U-bahn and S-bahn, this hostel is the perfect base from which you can explore the beautiful city of Berlin. The only downside? Paying for towels and breakfast. Thrifty backpackers all know how to solve this problem though -- bring/make your own.
