Description

The Hostelz.com Review

If you've always wanted to stay in a lighthouse, then Lizard Point YHA - Cornwall Hostel is for you. It's actually located right below the Lizard Lighthouse in a former Victorian hotel (now owned by the National Trust). It's also the most southerly point on mainland Britain and a lot quieter than other parts of Cornwall.

The Location

Lizard Point Hostel is right on the coast, which is exactly where you want to be when holidaying in Cornwall. It's about a mile south of the Lizard Village, which is serviced by buses, so you could reach it without a car. It's also located on the southwest coastal footpath, so you could use it as a stepping stone on your walking holiday.

There's a lot to do around Lizard YHA. There are plenty of places to enjoy this coastal location, from right outside the door, or at any of the nearby beaches and coves. From the hostel itself you can explore the lighthouse during opening hours (there is an admission cost) or go down to the point of the hostel to read up on the history of the coastline. If you like walking, then an easy day walk would be to and from Kynance Cove, which is simply glorious with its little cafe and turquoise water. Cadgwith Cove in the opposite direction is another beautiful stretch. While the Lizard YHA is self catering, it's only a short stroll back to the village for pubs, restaurants, cafes, and internet.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Lizard YHA has a variety of small rooms and en suites catering for individuals, families, and even groups (you can actually book out the whole place for a function if you wish). All have been recently refurbished and are very clean, thanks to the work of volunteer staff from the YHA who do an excellent job with the upkeep.

Common Spaces

The Lizard YHA is a particularly spacious place with large dining, kitchen, lounge, and other communal areas (a drying room, washing/drying facilities). The kitchen has modern facilities, such as microwave, stoves, toasters, ovens, and hot tops. Lizard YHA can easily accommodate groups or individual and family travelers without giving guests the feeling on being top of each other, but with plenty of space for interaction also. There is plenty of local information in the lounge if you decide to head out and explore.

Summary

The only drawback to staying by a lighthouse is that when visibility is poor, thanks to mist or fog, the foghorn sounds and other visitors have reported that throughout the night into the wee hours. You may therefore want to pack your earplugs. While we reported no fog the nights we stayed there, it was incredibly windy on this headland and it was best to go to more sheltered places in the day like Kynance.
