Ostello della Pace Reviews

The Ostello di Assisi Hostel or Hostel of Peace definitely lives up to its name. The hostel is situated a short way down the hill and through some olive groves from Assisi, where St. Francis of Assisi -- the saint associated with peace -- was from. The walk is about ten minutes from the bus station. When leaving the hostel there is a bus stop about ten minutes down from the hostel, so bags dont have to be wrestled up the slopes.

The hostel is in a converted stone farmhouse. Chairs in the front of the hostel provide a sunny spot in which to sit and read or look at the view. The rooms themselves have views of either the town higher up or the Umbrian fields and olive groves below. Rooms are kept immaculately clean, although this may be the price you pay for having a lockout from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Rooms with six beds or family rooms with ensuite are available. A lack of power points in the rooms makes it difficult to charge mobile phones, cameras, and laptops.

Bathrooms are basic but also very clean. Laundry can be done for a small price. The hostel provides a free, basic breakfast in the large dining room. A three-course dinner can be arranged for a fee. Wine and soft drinks are available at the hostel. The hostel does not have any internet facilities -- these can also be hard to find in the town (ask at the tourist office in the main square).

This hostel does not give off a party vibe, but then again, Assisi is more a place of pilgrimage than party. The views and cleanliness of the hostel make this a very pleasant spot for a couple of days.

Although you're not exactly overwhelmed with choice as to where to stay in Assisi, this hostel presented itself very nicely and was relatively cheap. The staff can be abrupt, but I think it's mostly the language barrier. It's not an especially social hostel, but the setting is unbeatable.

This hostel was clean, but that was about all. There are too many rules to remember and the hostel staff was very rude. There is a great view of Assisi from the windows, but that only means that you have to walk up all that distance to get to the town. The walk is fine in the day, but at night it can be treacherous. When we got back to our dormitory-style room at 9:30 p.m. everyone staying there was already asleep, and there is only one light in the room. The room set-up is not conducive for group living.

I have visited this hostel and didn't stay. I was there just to check availabilities. It looked really great. Okay, so it's a hostel and rooms are dormitories and simple, but the area is plain beautiful. There is a great view from the windows of the rooms. Other hostels in Assisi are either too expensive or quite ugly (modern buildings). I can't say the welcome was awfully great, but it was okay.

I stayed here in November 2003. I found it to be a very clean and hospitable hostel with caring staff. The area in which it is located is a great scenic area. It is the best hostel I have ever stayed at and I have already recomended it to others.

I have stayed at many hostels in Europe and this one is definitely one of the better ones. The hostel itself is in the countryside, with wonderful vistas of Assisi and the Umbrian landscape. Upon arrival, I was treated most hospitably. The receptionist even offered me leftovers from that evening's dinner, which, I may add, was very reasonably priced. Normally I stay clear of HI hostels but this one I did not particularly mind. In fact, I had a very pleasant stay!

The hostel itself is fine, but the staff obviously hates being there, and takes it out on the guests. VERY rude. I mean, VERY rude, and snappy, and cold, and plain out MEAN. All of them. As if just because we're only hostelers we're dirt, type of thing. And if you want to use a phone after 11, too bad! Can't leave the hostel, and the only phone is in the common room which closes at 11. And they WILL kick you out (and then you can go sit in your room or in the bathroom because there's nowhere else to go.)
