Bothy Hostel provides a cozy stay in downtown Arequipa. Staff are friendly, rooms are well-priced, and there are plenty of places to hang out.
The Location
The hostel is located a few minutes' walk outside Arequipa’s historical center, five blocks from the main plaza. Several parks can also be found within a short jaunt. Directly outside the hostel, travelers will encounter multiple restaurants, shops, tourist agencies, and laundries. The closest pharmacies and a mini-supermarket are located in the main plaza. Bothy is about a fifteen-minute cab ride from the bus terminal and about a half-hour's drive from the airport.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Bothy Hostel offers several room options. Dorms range from four to six beds, and the rooms are fairly spacious. Each dorm is equipped with medium-sized lockers and a small shelf. Unfortunately, each bunk is not given its own power outlet. The beds themselves are quite comfortable and warm enough for chilly nights.
The accommodation features multiple, well-sized shared bathrooms, with shower, toilet, and sink, all kept tidy. Hot water and good pressure can be acquired by all showers.
Wi-fi is generally weak and spotty, though better in some areas than others.
Common Spaces
Bothy has been built into multiple stories, and as such there are lots of stairs to climb. However, guests are rewarded with several places to chill out. The first floor includes the hostel’s reception desk, a pool table, and fully-stocked bar (no outside drinks allowed). Up one level is a nice seating area with couches and coffee table. At the top of the hostel is a small kitchen and spacious dining terrace, filled with tables, chairs, hammocks, and a great view of the city and also a large area for hanging wet clothes.
Travelers are invited to a complimentary breakfast of bread, jam, coffee, and tea. Though overpriced, other breakfast foods such as eggs can be ordered. In fact, guests aren’t able to use the kitchen until after breakfast ends (10 a.m.).
Arequipa gets quite sunny, and while Bothy attempts to provide shelter via thin fabric shades, it’s not quite enough to block the sun. This can be annoying on particularly sunny days.
Bothy Hostel isn’t an all-out party hostel, but the bar can get fairly rowdy at times. Even so, the rooms are far enough away from the bottom floor that you are able to get some decent rest.
Summary
Overall, Bothy offers a decent stay for budget travelers. Staff speak Spanish and the manager also speaks English. Reception is open twenty-four hours and luggage storage is available. Guests should be aware that when making reservations online, Bothy does not recognize the down payment as going toward the cost of the accommodation. As such, the actual room prices are a few soles higher than advertised online.

Bothy is one of Ariquipa´s newest, and most definitely the funkiest and friendliest! We are located in a safe street just 5 minutes walk from Arequipa´s spectacular Plaza de Armas, and even closer to Arequipa´s bustling nightlife.
Bothy is with fun and friendly staff who love spoiling every guest who walks through our door.
Bothy Hostel offers rooms for an exceptionally affordable price. All rooms are clean, spacious, include linen and warm blankets, plus thick comfy mattresses.
We have a common area with a huge DVD collection for those times when you just want to chill out. We also have a gorgeous roof top terrace with hammocks and table and chairs which is the ideal place for travelers to socialise and meet people, and of course take in the spectacular views of the surrounding volcanoes. We frequently have barbeques so guests can meet and get to know one another. Bothy Hostel has great atmosphere at all times of the day. Bring your beers in and we are happy to open them for you.
