Situated in a beautiful old (or designed to look so) building Mikaso Hotel offers a more peaceful and relaxed alternative to the party-hard vibes most of the hostels in San Pedro throw out. But don't worry about being out of the action as Mikaso Hotel pretty much marks where the beats start, growing louder and louder the further west you head.
The Location
This place has a pretty good location; if you arrive from Panajachel or from any of the towns to the east, the walk from the dock to the hotel takes you through the touristic heart of San Pedro and is a pleasant walk in and of itself. Arrivals from Santiago Atitlan will only have a five-minute walk from the dock to the hostel. Everything you could need within San Pedro is within an easy ten- to fifteen-minute walk; the farmer's market and more substantial shops are up a substantial hill, but luckily there are plenty of tuk tuks buzzing around the city, concentrating around the dock.
Mikaso Hotel itself is a little tricky to find, as it's down a dirt path that is partly obscured by signs and foliage. But keep a keen eye out for signs for either Mikaso Hotel or its restaurant and they will guide you in the right direction.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms come in either six- or eight-bed varieties, all advertised with en suites. The dorms do not lock, but there are lockers present in the rooms for your use (bring your own lock). Beds are clean and comfortable as well as made up daily. Private rooms have a lot more variety with single, double, triple, quadruple, and sextuple rooms, all with en suite bathrooms as well.
Bathrooms and showers are roomy and clean; there is plenty of room with towel racks and shelves. There are communal bathrooms and showers as well, despite each room being en suite.
Common Spaces
Common spaces are plentiful, there is a large kitchen that is very well stocked with all the equipment you could need for cooking. The large patios that encircle the hotel are furnished with tables and chairs that face what must be one of the best views in town. In front of the reception there is another sitting area that is protected from the elements and has couches rather than deck chairs, making it a more comfortable at night. There is an upstairs deck area, but this is primarily for restaurant customers -- but if you buy a drink, they will let you sit there as long as you don't bring your own food or drinks.
This is not a particularly social hostel, as it is a hotel first and foremost, and some of the hotel rooms have extra beds in them to act as dorms. Being at one end of the tourist strip doesn't do it any favors atmosphere-wise, but if you are looking for a more relaxed, quieter option for your stay in San Pedro. Hotel Mikaso will fit the bill.
Summary
It's not the best location if you like being in the heat of the action, but if you prefer to have the heat close at hand while still being able to get away, then Hotel Mikaso is perfect. Bear in mind Mikaso is a hotel first, restaurant second, and hostel third; however, it still has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
