Hotel Schanzenstern - Altona is located in the quarter Ottensen in the western urban borough Altona. In the last ten years, the tourism in the area around Hamburg, the biggest city in the north of Germany, has gained importance, with more than thirteen million overnight stays a year.
The Location
The hostel is located an area with several bars, cafes, and a lot of shopping options. There are two malls nearby with numerous premises for all kind of products, from groceries to clothing. The well-known harbor area can be reached within ten minutes by metro. The street on which the hostel is situated is quiet at night, we did not hear any noise. The location is good and not far from the major points of interest.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel feels more like a hotel, and the main reason is that this place is two in one -- you can book not only the usual hotel rooms but also shared rooms. In the shared room, there are free lockers available for every bed. No bunk beds are put in the room. Additionally, the room is rather spacious and every bed has a separate bedside lamp. However, we missed sockets next to the beds -- there is only a central "socket strip" that is far away for most of the beds -- so it is not comfortable if someone wants to recharge the phone and use it at the same time. The bathroom, including the toilet, is clean and the facilities are well maintained. Everything works well and the installations can be used comfortably.
Common Spaces
The common area is limited to the "restaurant room" with chairs and tables. They are used for breakfast (which is not included in the price) and lunch. For lunch, you can choose from several dishes to order, so it is also some sort of restaurant. Wi-Fi is free -- the signal works in the room and the speed is ok. This hotel lacks atmosphere -- the lack of common spaces makes it hard so socialize with anyone and in fact, we did not find any people to hang out with. The staff in the hotel did not treat us worse because we booked the shared room. They are neither unfriendly nor exceptionally friendly; the atmosphere with the staff is all right.
Summary
You get a clean, spacious room with well-working facilities in a good location. You will not get a second home or party hostel, and socializing is not easy due to the limited common areas. The place is definitely recommendable if you do not focus on socializing but care more about getting an accommodation of good quality.

Description
Whether you are travelling alone, in pairs, with your family, a group or as a backpacker: the Schanzenstern-Altona has the right accommodation for every taste.
The entrance is in the backyard. The lift, which is accessible for handicapped persons, can be reached directly from the foyer. On the ground floor, there is a lounge with a TV and internet access as well as the breakfast room. The house is completely free of cigarette smoke.
In the morning, we prepare a delicious breakfast buffet for our guests. We use mostly products of certified organic cultivation. A packed lunch can be ordered as well.
All our rooms as well as the appartments are free of cigarette smoke. On the first floor we have rooms that are accessible for handicapped persons and a kitchen, that all our guests may use free of charge between 7.30 a.m. and 10 p.m.
On the 2nd up to the 4th floor there are single and double rooms as well as family rooms and dorms. A special highlight can be booked at a favourable weekly rate: our appartments on the top floor – equipped with living room, sleeping room, kitchen and bathroom, one of them also accessible for the handicapped!

he Schanzenstern Altona lies in the middle of Ottensen, a district that belongs to Hamburg-Altona – one of the liveliest quarters in Hamburg. Altona station is only a 5-minute-walk away. You can get to the Altona station either directly by train or by S-Bahn (about 11 minutes from central station). The former working-class neighborhood offers its inhabitants and guests a special flair. Cafes, restaurants and multicultural life shape its streets and squares. Whether for shopping or bar-hopping in Ottensen or on foot to the river Elbe for a walk at the beach (with a magnificent sunset!) - our guests benefit from the central location!
