Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel Reviews

Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel is a basic pub hostel located in the heart of Temple Bar, Dublin.

The Location

If you want to drink and party with all the tourists and then walk straight up to your bed, then this hostel has the perfect location -- right on the main street of Temple Bar, where you have many pubs and restaurants as well as a Tesco supermarket all within a five-minute walk. If you are looking for a quiet night's sleep, this is not the place, as Oliver St. John Gogarty's Pub is metres away from the hostel. Otherwise, most attractions are either located within walking distance or a quick trip on a tram or bus. If you are coming from the airport then it is around a ten-minute walk from the cheaper local airport bus that arrives on Abbey Street just across the river.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel offers a range of different-sized dorm rooms as well as private twin rooms. Dorm rooms range in size from four to ten beds and are fairly basic hostel rooms. Each bed comes with its own roll-cage locker, which requires you to provide your own lock and is big enough for most smaller bags but is not overly secure as you can still stick your fingers through the gaps. Power sockets are lacking -- the ten-bed dorm only has power sockets around one bunk and only two plugs are available for the whole room. The window overlooks the adjacent pub, so you get a lot of noise till quite late.

Most rooms come with en suite bathrooms except for some twin rooms. Bathrooms are somewhat clean, but this depends on everyone else in your room. If the one bathroom is occupied in your ten-bed dorm, it is a long way down to the only other bathroom near the common rooms on the first floor. The shower hot-water system also makes a lot of noise, which is not ideal if you're trying to shower whilst everyone else is sleeping.

Common Spaces

If you are staying at this hostel, you're most likely here to enjoy the nearby pubs; but if not, there are still a couple of common areas in which to relax. There is a small TV lounge with a couple of couches and a table that is not overly inviting. If you want to cook your own food, there is a kitchen with everything you need to cook basic meals, as well as a large dining area that also serves as a breakfast room in the morning. Unfortunately the hygiene of these areas is lacking, with loads of flies and mouldy food in the kitchen and bread ends and crumbs all in the breakfast area around the bread slicer that looks like it hasn't been cleaned around in months. Breakfast is included but does not seem the most hygienic either. The kitchen also shuts by 8 or 9 p.m. to try and encourage you to head to their pub, which has its own restaurant serving Irish food and live music every night.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel. Luggage storage is available for free on your arrival date, but is not available on departure date so you would need to store bags elsewhere. The hostel is also at least five stories high with no working elevator at the moment (although it looked during our stay like one was being installed) so it is a hard climb with lots of luggage.

Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel is a budget option perfect for anyone who just wants a no-frills stay in the heart of Temple Bar. If you want a quiet night's sleep and a decent common area then there are other options available.

Can easily go from average to excellent

Great location with clean rooms, however, The shower was very weak and the common areas were dirty.

I only give this a star because I have to

This place is disgusting. The moldings on the floor were caked with grime, the bathrooms had no soap & my 3 friends and I's "clean" sheets had hair on them. There is also no security, they do not ID people who come in after hours & multiple strangers approached our door. Even more alarming, they allowed an older local man to stay in a room full of girls in their early 20s; why does a guy who apparently lives in the area need to stay in a hostel by himself if he's not up to something weird? After convincing the drunkest girl in the room to leave with him alone one night, he quickly and suspiciously checked out the following morning. Absolutely no reason that he should have ever been allowed to bunk with them in the first place, or even let a bed at all. I was really unsettled by my experience here & would caution anyone against staying somewhere that's so lax about guest security/safety.

Good experience, I'll come back for sure

I've been here couple of times and I could spend good time. The Hostel is in the centre of temple bar, is also clean and have a friendly staff. The price is ok and the pub downstairs is one of the oldest.

You can spend a really good time here , you can find easly when you arrive in Dublin The Location is the best, is in the heart of Temple Bar,

if you will arrive whit the bus it's gonna be easy find the hostel.

the place as you can see is in the centre of Temple Bar so don't aspect a quite place.

You can also find place for eat around the hostel whit a reasonable price, one of them is the mongolian restaurant really cheap and quite good, what else ? Just every pub around this area, beautiful atmosphere great music and awesome people.

The rooms are big enought and are quite clean, you have also the opportunity to lock your staff but you should bring a lock from home, some room have the bathroom in the room.

Some times the bathroom is not well clean but wasn't so bad.

The hot water work well

There is a big common space where you can chill and read on a confortable sofa, or where you can watch the tv or listen music.

The kitchen is not huge but you can find the best time for cook, just the few frypan for cook, they should try to organize different the kitchen.

The night is not really quite, sometimes there is noise, maybe drunk people but you are always in Dublin.

You can for sure enjoy your time in this hostel , the price is Ok, the location is great, the staff is friendly and helpful, the room are confortable and clean enought .

there is also a beautiful pub downstair , so you can listen a real Irish music and also enjoy the Irish food drinking a pinte of Guiness and come back in your room in less than one minute.

Perfect for people easy going who likes meet new people and want to stay located in a good area of Dublin.

Just if you travel whit your girlfriend maybe it's better to get a private room or just get the dormitory and hope to have normal people in your room.

Perfect for who travel alone or whit friends .

Try this Hostel and Enjoy the beauty of Dublin, feel the music and the culture aound temple bar.

Nice but noisy

A nice place to stay for the night if you are in town. Unfortunately it can be a bit noisy as it is in the Temple Bar area but overall around average.

Great location but very noisy!

Temple Bar is in the heart of Dublin and it is fun to be around. The problem is noise. If you are tired and want to sleep, it is hard to sleep just 2 floors above an Irish bar.
