Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel Reviews

Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel is a basic pub hostel located in the heart of Temple Bar, Dublin.

The Location

If you want to drink and party with all the tourists and then walk straight up to your bed, then this hostel has the perfect location -- right on the main street of Temple Bar, where you have many pubs and restaurants as well as a Tesco supermarket all within a five-minute walk. If you are looking for a quiet night's sleep, this is not the place, as Oliver St. John Gogarty's Pub is metres away from the hostel. Otherwise, most attractions are either located within walking distance or a quick trip on a tram or bus. If you are coming from the airport then it is around a ten-minute walk from the cheaper local airport bus that arrives on Abbey Street just across the river.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel offers a range of different-sized dorm rooms as well as private twin rooms. Dorm rooms range in size from four to ten beds and are fairly basic hostel rooms. Each bed comes with its own roll-cage locker, which requires you to provide your own lock and is big enough for most smaller bags but is not overly secure as you can still stick your fingers through the gaps. Power sockets are lacking -- the ten-bed dorm only has power sockets around one bunk and only two plugs are available for the whole room. The window overlooks the adjacent pub, so you get a lot of noise till quite late.

Most rooms come with en suite bathrooms except for some twin rooms. Bathrooms are somewhat clean, but this depends on everyone else in your room. If the one bathroom is occupied in your ten-bed dorm, it is a long way down to the only other bathroom near the common rooms on the first floor. The shower hot-water system also makes a lot of noise, which is not ideal if you're trying to shower whilst everyone else is sleeping.

Common Spaces

If you are staying at this hostel, you're most likely here to enjoy the nearby pubs; but if not, there are still a couple of common areas in which to relax. There is a small TV lounge with a couple of couches and a table that is not overly inviting. If you want to cook your own food, there is a kitchen with everything you need to cook basic meals, as well as a large dining area that also serves as a breakfast room in the morning. Unfortunately the hygiene of these areas is lacking, with loads of flies and mouldy food in the kitchen and bread ends and crumbs all in the breakfast area around the bread slicer that looks like it hasn't been cleaned around in months. Breakfast is included but does not seem the most hygienic either. The kitchen also shuts by 8 or 9 p.m. to try and encourage you to head to their pub, which has its own restaurant serving Irish food and live music every night.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel. Luggage storage is available for free on your arrival date, but is not available on departure date so you would need to store bags elsewhere. The hostel is also at least five stories high with no working elevator at the moment (although it looked during our stay like one was being installed) so it is a hard climb with lots of luggage.

Summary

Oliver St. John Gogarty's Hostel is a budget option perfect for anyone who just wants a no-frills stay in the heart of Temple Bar. If you want a quiet night's sleep and a decent common area then there are other options available.
