Borneo Seahare Guesthouse is a spacious hostel situated close to Kuching waterfront. It has good Wi-Fi throughout the hostel and a key card to enter both the hostel and sleeping area. Upon booking, they also send an email to you explaining how to reach the hostel and how to contact them if needed.
The Location
From the airport, Borneo Seahare Guesthouse is about a twenty-minute drive away. The location of the hostel is reasonably good, although it can be a little tricky to see their sign, especially if you arrive when it is dark. Outside, there are many mini marts and restaurants at excellent prices. The Waterfront area is a short, five-minute walk or so away as well. For local tourist attractions such as the Bako National Park and Semenggoh Nature Reserve, the bus stops are about a twenty-five-minute walk away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The fourteen-bed dorm looks a little tired and rundown. There is only one light for the whole room, and as a consequence, it is fairly dark, even though every bed has its own individual light as well (and plug socket). The room is quite big, so there is plenty of room to leave your belongings and bags without someone tripping up. There is air-conditioning, although it leaks (it’s not over anyone’s bed, however) and it doesn’t seem to work particularly well (it was set to sixteen degrees and the room wasn’t freezing during our stay). The beds themselves are quite squeaky but are comfortable enough, but the blanket is massively too small.
There are two toilets and three showers. The toilet rooms are fairly small -- you can’t fully open the door, as the toilet is in the way -- but they are clean and well maintained. The showers are half outside, but are good and hot. Again, though, the lighting isn’t great as there is only one light by the showers, so using the mirrors at night time is a struggle.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a very large and open communal area on the first floor with reception. At one end of the room, there is a TV with a sofa area; in the middle, there is a bar and seating area; and at the far end, there is another sofa and chairs for relaxing. There is air conditioning in the communal area, but again it is still quite hot. In addition, the lighting is poor, so it is quite dark. The staff are friendly and welcoming, as are the other backpackers. A free breakfast comprising of toast and jam is provided from 8 a.m. and there are self-catering facilities available if you wish to cook.
Summary
This is a very nice hostel. Its location is good and the people are friendly, inviting, and helpful. The drawbacks are that everywhere is a bit dark and the air conditioning -- particularly in the communal area -- isn’t great. Overall, for those coming and staying in the Kuching area, we would happily recommend staying at Borneo Seahare Guesthouse.

Borneo Seahare Guesthouse is a great place to base yourself during your stay in Kuching. We offer an air conditioned 12 bed mixed dorm, air conditioned private double rooms with fans, and a private twin room with air con and fan. We have shared bathroom facilities, a communal kitchen area with fridge, kettle, toaster, a dining area, and a lounge area with a comfortable sofa, flat screen television and a DVD player with over 300 DVDs. Free WiFi is available throughout the guesthouse, and a computer with internet access is provided for guest use.

• To get to the guesthouse from the airport:
• Turn right at the traffic lights to exit the airport and continue straight along Jalan Lapangan Terbang, over the flyover. This road becomes Jalan Tabuan. Continue straight, over the next two flyovers, and straight on at the next two sets of traffic lights.
• When you reach the roundabout, take the 2nd exit (straight on) and drive down the hill towards the waterfront. Pass Tandoori Palace (on your right) and Leboh temple (a red temple on your left) and the guesthouse is located almost immediately on the left after the temple. The guesthouse is on the floor above Paradesa Borneo bicycle tour shop.
• On foot from the bus station:
• Walk along the waterfront with the river on your left hand side (about 5-10 minutes).
• When you reach a junction with some traffic lights, the Chinese museum and a yellow banner with "evolution of cycling", you need to turn right(you should be able to see a red temple a few metres up the road). The first shop on the right is Paradesa Borneo and the guesthouse is upstairs.
• If you arrive before 7pm there will be bicycles outside the shop and on the road which makes it easier to spot.
