The long-running Loubser's B&B Self Catering has been the only budget option for backpackers in Walvis Bay for many years. While it is a bit rough around the edges, it nevertheless gives good value for the very low price.

The Location

Located just a five-minute walk from Walvis Bay lagoon and another five minutes to the waterfront restaurants, Loubser's is on a very quiet street. The town center is about one kilometer away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The main house contains the private double and twin rooms, all en suite. The dorms are in a separate building at the back of the property. There are two five-bed dorms and one ten-bed dorm (all en suite also). The five-bed dorms have a small kitchenette with sink, two-hob electric cooker, fridge, and a kettle. There are a couple of pots and a frying pan in each dorm, and enough cutlery. The shower in our dorm doesn't have a head on it, and the water pours directly from the pipe, but the water is good and hot. The mattresses are a little saggy, though. The ten-bed dorm is an odd mix of single and bunk beds spread over two adjoining spaces. One of these spaces is a de facto sitting room with TV and sofas, but also three single beds. The kitchen in this ten-bed dorm has a microwave and coffee maker in addition to the cooker, fridge, and kettle. All the dorms have DSTV with a wide choice of channels.

Common Spaces

There's not much to speak of regarding common spaces. There is a breakfast room, which doubles as a sitting room where the free Wi-Fi signal is reasonable. You can choose to have breakfast included in your bed price. It will consist of an omelet, toast, and tea or coffee. There is no free tea or coffee provided here. The two private rooms at the side of the main house have a small veranda with garden furniture and the dorms have a couple of wooden tables where you can sit outside in the yard. The yard also has parking space for three vehicles inside the security gate.

Summary

While it's a little past its best, this is still very good value, as it's so cheap and the live-in owners are really friendly and helpful. The ten-bed dorm is an oddity with its eccentric layout, but the five-bed dorms are quite comfortable. Only one of the four metal lockers actually works, but there is a small table by the kitchenette that can be used for luggage. Loubser's runs a few tours from their place in their own vehicle and they are knowledgeable about the surrounding area should you want advice. This place is not bad!
