On arrival at Little Earth Lodge, we were greeted by the really friendly owners and made to feel at home straight away. This is somewhere you come to get away from it all to get that totally chilled-out feeling, despite being only five kilometers from town. From the hostel, you can take a simply beautiful hike through some amazing rock formations and within that walk you can take in three caves (the most famous is Abbey Cave, where you will see thousands of glow worms). You can also hire a caving kit from the hostel, which includes a head torch, helmet, and water shoes. The LocationThis hostel is tucked away from town in a beautiful, quiet location with just the sound of wildlife around you. Rooms and BathroomsOur share room had lovely comfy beds, a wardrobe, and a couple of bedside tables in it and there are also plenty of power points to charge up all those essential items. The share rooms have just three beds with no bunks; bedding is provided and extra blankets are in all rooms. The bathrooms are spotless and cleaned throughout the day; there are two toilets, two showers, and even a bath.Common SpacesThe kitchen and common area are a thirty-second walk from the hostel sleeping area; the kitchen is well stocked, with loads of pots, pans, glasses, and every utensil you could need. The kitchen is huge and has loads of space to eat indoors and out. There is a small TV room with a couple of sofas, a large DVD collection, table football, board games, and a book exchange -- it's a nice room in which to unwind! The atmosphere at Little Earth Lodge is a nice, relaxing one and the great mix of people make it even more special. Summary We found the owners to be a fountain of knowledge for both the local area and further afield in New Zealand; while they can book other tourist trips for you, they are never pushy to sell you anything. If you arrive late, they can even sort you out with a few food items. This place is special a real hidden gem, and with only a few beds, it's essential to book ahead in summer. We stayed for a couple of days but could have stayed a couple of weeks! This is an awesome place for sure.
