Housed in what used to be a family home, Negombo Backpackers is one of the tiniest hostels you will ever see with only two rooms of four beds each. However, its common areas are spacious and you have everything you will need for a relaxing stay.
The Location
Amongst all the backpackers of Negombo, this one is probably the furthest away one from the sea. However, it is also the closest one to the railway station -- riding the mini-steam train is an experience in itself that you should definitely not miss out on when you are in the country! It is located in a quiet residential area where there are hardly any other accommodation providers but there are a lot of local-style family homes. Food might be hard to source here and the nearest supermarket is maybe about half an hour from here on foot. However, free breakfast is included in the price, which is definitely a bonus!
Rooms and Bathrooms
The place just about manages to fit two bunks into both of its rooms to provide a hostel-style accommodation. Therefore, the dorms are somewhat crammed and you hardly have any space to unpack your bags. However, the beds are of a decent size and the air conditioning is excellent quality. You also get a locker that is big enough to fit your entire backpack. The style here is also quite pleasant, and as prices are slightly higher than the average, the place is never full.
Common Spaces
The common areas could not be more eclectic. There is an outdoors area which is super upbeat and modern looking, which offers a pool table and some spaces to chill. There is also a wooden platform with coloured beanbags, which is a really nice place to chill. However, inside you will find a local-style living room with religious pictures and old-fashioned furniture. However, you can watch TV or play video games here. There is also a kitchen available for common use.
Summary
Staying at this hostel can be the ideal choice if you are done with the crowds and are looking for somewhere quiet without many people around. Its location also gives you a good opportunity to have a glimpse into local people’s lives.
