Moonrise Hostel is one of the choices for budget lodgings in Port Antonio offering dorm beds. Port Antonio is one of the quieter Jamaican towns; although it does get its fair share of cruise ships, there's a lot less hassle here than further west.
The Location
Moonrise Hostel is located a ten-minute walk from the town center, just over one kilometer east, down a quiet road branching off the A4 highway. The town is a gateway into the John Crow Mountains, which loom behind it, and sights such as Winnifred's Beach, Blue Lagoon, and Reach Falls are easily accessible by route taxi or minibus. Kingston can be reached via a lovely two-hour minibus trip through the mountains.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Opening in within a few years of this writing, Moonrise is a very basic hostel of three bedrooms in a small local house. When we stayed, only two rooms were in use -- a private double and an eight-bed dorm. The third room is being redecorated as a large twin room. The dorm has sturdy, wooden bunk beds and plenty of space. A standing fan ventilates the room and there are large wooden lockers for storage. The mattresses are ok, but are a little saggy and there is a single small desk with chair. There is also a charging point on the floor in the dorm. The private room is also fan-cooled and all rooms share a single bathroom with a toilet, leaky hand basin, a cold water shower, and a washing machine.
Common Spaces
As you enter the front garden gate, you will pass through the untidy front yard and come to the veranda, which has an old sofa and cushions. Inside, the sitting room also has a sofa and a bed around a glass table. The bed is used by the owner when the hostel is full. There is a very basic and cluttered kitchen with a gas stove; fridge; and plenty of cutlery, crockery, and rather battered pots and pans. It's not the cleanest kitchen we've ever seen however, with dirty pots and pans left for days on end.
Summary
This is the cheapest option in Port Antonio and one of the cheapest places in Jamaica. It's ok, but could seriously do with some wholesale redecorating. It's very tatty and ramshackle but just about clean enough. There are serious issues with mosquitoes in the rooms and the owner's two dogs can be a problem, too. The dogs are kept in the front yard by the dorm, and they are very noisy into the night and early in the morning, so bring earplugs! When we stayed, there was only one key to the house, needing negotiations with Everton, the owner; his auntie across the road; and guests as to who would have the key so everyone could get in when they wanted. Some were still left waiting on the porch outside on their return!
This is a local Jamaican house, and it is very basic, but the owner, Everton, is a very friendly, relaxed person and really makes this place better than it looks. If you are interested -- he doesn't push tours to his guests -- ask him about a trip into the mountains or into the rural areas tourists don't go, to see the "real" Jamaica. He's full of original ideas.
