Everest Home Stay Apartment is a family-run hostel in the countryside area on the southern outskirts of Kathmandu. With a cosy and traditional vibe, it offers dorm rooms to those eager to experience something off the beaten track. However, with its closeness to Patan, it can also be a good base for exploring the historic sites of the town.
The Location
The hostel is located in the area of Patan, but not in Patan itself; in fact, it is about an hour's walk from Durbar Square and all the tourist attractions of the city. Staying here can give you a great experience of what life is like in a quiet Nepalese village away from the crowds of Kathmandu. However, while it is a very calm place, at the time of the review, dogs were barking the whole night while roosters woke up those not used to the noises of the countryside as early as 6 a.m.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The place offers several dorms with bunks. The rooms are spacious, but quite dirty and unorganised. There is a single cupboard inside, and while there are many sockets, these are of poor quality. Moreover, the windows are outside their frame, so it can be quite hard and even dangerous opening and closing them. The bathroom is quite basic. Although it is nicely decorated with colourful tiles, it could be a lot cleaner.
Common Spaces
There is a nice rooftop area where the owner offers tea and coffee to visitors upon arrival. You can also arrange to have dinner with the family here. There is also plenty of space in the reception area to sit and chat. Moreover, there is a very basic kitchen available on the ground floor. There is also a lot of material available on trekking and the owner is happy to advise anybody on the outdoors activities they are planning to undertake.
Summary
All in all, Everest Home Stay Apartment offers something different from all the other hostels around the area --here, you can stay away from the crowds and experience the quiet life of the Nepalese countryside and its residents. A cosy and welcoming atmosphere is guaranteed, though it is probably not your place if you are too fussy about cleanliness.
