It really doesn't get much better than Hostel Tropico 20; if you don't want to stay where you dive and can live without being in the heart of the action, you could do a lot worse but not much better.
The Location
The place has a good location -- the ocean can be seen right outside of the hostel's doorway -- and while the hostel is still definitely in the tourist area of San Miguel, it isn't right in the centre where the cruise ships come in. There aren't as many crowds, but there's still plenty of shops and restaurants within a good easy walking distance. The hostel is very easy to find, due to its location, and there is theoretically parking available to those hard workers who bring cars to the small islands. The ferry ports are five blocks down the road where the town centre of San Miguel is located.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are an interesting setup as there are sleeping pods in single and double as well as double private rooms and four-person dorm rooms. All the rooms are comfortable and clean, with lots of those little amenities that takes a hostel from four to five stars. There's a reading light and power plug for each bed, plus downlights in the dorms so the lights can be on without blinding everyone else trying to sleep -- it's the little things! All the dorms are located in the hallway, which leads to the bathroom and shower area, where there are five of each with separate sinks. All facilities are spacious, clean, and well thought out with hooks and shelves in the showers.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are great; there are benches, couches, and bean bags out in the front by the reception and then past the kitchen is a more secluded patio area with more of the same plus clotheslines. The kitchen is excellent, with plenty of room to maneuver, plus all the gear with which you could desire to cook. The reception has plenty of information available in the way of magazines and brochures, even if the staff themselves don't have much in the way of suggestions.
Summary
It is always great to see a hostel that is made by backpackers for backpackers, an excellent location in reach of everything the island has to offer, and comfortable surrounds to relax in when not doing that. What more could you ask for?
