Bay Vista Guesthouse is a tidy little place that is a more intimate choice in the Mossel Bay area. It's has the same owner as Shark Shack Backpackers, so it acts as overspill for that place, but is a pretty decent choice in its own right.
The Location
The hostel's Montagu Street location offers wonderful views over the bay and the ocean from the front porch and is just a short, five-minute walk from the town center and a fifteen-minute walk from the beach.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are just six rooms in this little place, and all (including the dorm) have TV. The main dorm has four beds and is cozy, with good mattresses and clean, warm linen. There is a wardrobe and a work table under the small, wall-mounted TV and a floor fan. Another room, with just two beds, is also sold as a small dorm, and is ideal for couples or friends who don't want the extra expense of a double or twin room. The private rooms are all en suite, but the dorms share spotless ablutions. One of the shared bathrooms has a toilet and shower and the other a toilet and bathtub. The private rooms are a bargain at the price and very comfortable indeed and nicely decorated.
Common Spaces
At the back of the house, there is a long room that is split into a sitting room and a dining room/kitchen area. There's plenty of room here, with lots of cushioned chairs and a TV. The dining room has a long table and the kitchen is small but well equipped with kettle, toaster, microwave, four-hob electric cooker, and a fridge. There is plenty of cupboard space and certainly enough shiny pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery to go around. There is an annex behind the house with two more private rooms and some space for a small table and chairs. The front porch has a couple of sofas with that beautiful view over the bay to savor. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the house, though the signal is a little weak in the back rooms.
Summary
This is a great choice, particularly if you are traveling in the summer months when every South African goes on holiday! Beds are at a premium during these times, especially in Mossel Bay, and Bay Vista offers great quality but without the backpacker vibe. It's an excellent choice for couples and is a very cozy, quiet, little guesthouse.
