The Hostelz.com Review - Genuine, independent review you can trust.
Hostel Scarlet Sails is the only hostel in town, and we're very happy it's around! This place is way off the beaten path, but definitely worth checking out if you're interested in exploring the one of the hidden gems of Siberia.
The Location
The hostel is located not far from the center of Abakan. The city is not too big, but a bit spread out. The location is fantastic, though, as the train station is just around the corner and so is Main Street, where you'll find banks, shopping centers, and restaurants. There are a few beautiful parks within walking distance and the memorial for World War II is really interesting! They also have some theatres and museums, and we loved exploring the city.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are very spacious, and full of air and light. There is plenty of space for your belongings and to walk around. There are some clothes hangers and benches, and even lockers for valuables. Private rooms are also available. The bathrooms are shared and are also quite spacious and convenient. There is a good hot shower and the showers and toilets are clean and in good condition. The staff do a good job taking care of this place.
Common Spaces
As in most other hostels we've seen around Russia, hanging out is not a priority, so there are not many common spaces. There is, however, a fantastically fully equipped kitchen, which is just a pleasure to cook in. There is also a little dining area where there are some books and games. There is also a TV and the free Wi-Fi works just fine all over the place.
This place is quiet and good for relaxing. Be aware that alcohol is not allowed in the hostel; it is also completely nonsmoking and they have a curfew at 11 p.m., so think twice if you're a party animal. We haven't met many foreigners here, but there are people traveling from all around Russia and there is a very friendly atmosphere here.
Summary
We enjoyed our stay here very much and we highly recommend this place for anyone who is around, either for a quick layover on the way somewhere or to explore the town more deeply. It is truly one of the places that hasn't been ruined by over-tourism and has a very authentic scene to offer.
