Expensive wifi
The hostel was pretty cool. You can actually buy beer and wine at front desk. The location is beautiful if not a bit hard to get to without a car. The catch was that you have to pay a pound for 20 minutes of wifi. This is a bit of a pain. This means it will cost you a pound to check your email. Shouldn't included internet access be assumed these days?
It's hard to believe a hostel could be four-star but there you have it -- Cairngorm Lodge Youth Hostel is, and when you come, you'll see why. It's one of those places you book and end up extending your stay, particularly if the weather is good in this fabulous region.
The Location
This old Scottish shooting lodge is located right across from Loch Morlich and there's a large beach that's great for chilling out or engaging in various water sports. It's in the Cairngorm National Park, seven miles from Aviemore and two miles from Cairngorm mountain funicular. It's a great base for outdoor activities (some people undertake mountain climbing or rescue training nearby) and you're bound to meet a lot of other Scottish people holidaying here at all times of the year. You can go walking, climbing, biking, fishing, pony trekking, and skiing. It's really a destination for all seasons.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The comfortable rooms are all upstairs -- they're of the usual bunk variety. There are hospital-clean bathrooms.
Common Spaces
They provide the usual drying rooms, laundry facilities, and a quiet reading room with books and materials. You can also take a cup of tea/coffee out into the grounds and sit on a bench and relax. The reception area is also fairly homey and they don't object to you making yourself at home on the couch. There is also a fully equipped kitchen at the Lodge and a fabulous dining area with open windows, so you can enjoy views of the grounds while you eat. There's food available at the hostel, at the shop across the road, or in other facilities nearby.
Summary
This is one of SHYA's best hostels and locations, and with scenery and adventure like this right on the doorstep, you really should start planning a visit here now!
Loved this hostel and it exceeded my expectations. It has the best bathrooms in a hostel Ive ever been in. Each bunk in my room has two USB charging points and one PowerPoint. And a light. Kitchen was nice too.
One tip for improvement would be working on the doors that squeak so much. I woke up frequently throughout the night from roomies leaving to go to the toilet and the door being so loud
Will happily come back :)
Excellent location, friendly helpful staff and great food available. All in all a great place to stay.
Really friendly hostel staff. Homely feel and very clean. Lots of nice communal spaces to relax. Amazing showers in individual pods each with own toilet.
Great location, friendly helpful staff, well kept, good food.
Awesome team, location, services, atmosphere... the perfect hostel experience. The rooms are very clean and so the rest of the accommodations, they serve breakfast and dinner by request. The surroundings are majestic forests, lochs and mountains and there are endless paths to explore.
First time at the lodge and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my stay.
Staff are very friendly and welcoming to solo travellers. Lodge has good facilities and spotless throughout.
Looking at my shifts and availability to return for another visit. Area great for outdoors pub across the road with music is a bonus.
Really beautiful place, great walks in the area. As for the hostel, it was ultra clean, the rooms were so comfortable, the staff were helpful, and the food was excellent..
Definitely worth going!
Really lovely hostel!! Excellent toilet/shower facilities. Very much an older demographic than your average hostel.
This is a really nice hostel and staff are very helpful. Great location for hill walking and right next to a lovely beach and Loch. We really enjoyed our stay here it was very comfortable and had good facilities. Thank you
A great base for a few days walking. Food was excellent and super value.
Staff were very helpful
Comfortable stay in large room with three bunk beds and clean private bathroom.
What a fantastic youth hostel, everything and more. Staff were fabulous as was our room. Dont know if its been recently decorated but our room (2xdouble bunks with separate private shower room) had what looked like new bunk beds and window, our shower room looked brand new and was exceptional. The dining area was spacious with a conservatory, outdoor seating, basic but well needed and well cooked food. Myself and 9yr old son didnt want to leave. Will definitely be back, thankyou!! Xxxx
Fantastic stay. Perfect location. Friendly staff. An issue with our allocated shower prevents a top rating, but staff resolved the best they could. I'd definitely recommend this hostel and would stay again.
Great location and only walking distance from Loch Morlich! Toilets were very clean and the food was good. Only stayed for one night but was overall happy with our stay.
Lovely place where it is situated. Perfect for summer time which is what I did this summer. Bedrooms are big and spacious which is always a plus. Bathrooms are very clean and big as well. The hostel is located on a little hill looking down on Loch Morloch and it has a car park too. The views are incredible. Would recommend here :)
v.friendly staff, helpful at meal times but lCairngorm beer @3.95 a bottle is 50p more than at nearby bar. Lounge a bit gloomy - maybe that's because of Covid. Garden has great potential but seems a little neglected. Our bathroom ventilation poor and shower curtain too short with result floor always flooded after a shower. Staff gave us a towel to use as a floor mat but proper long shower curtain would make that unnecessary. It was nice that we didn't have to pay extra for towels.
Great team and well run.
I stayed with my family and we loved it so much we stayed again on the way back. We had a lovely wee breakfast in the morning which set us up for our long journey home. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Thank you.
I rated the atmosphere a little lower for my last stay but this was due to covid. The times I've stayed before have been lively with a buzz about the place. No ones fault this time - just how it is at the moment.
Happy with the procedures put in place.
This was reviewed under covid restrictions. Fantastic location. But I didnt see the facilities or shared areas as all closed.
