City Hostel Reviews

City Hostel Danang boasts a super portfolio of online pictures of the building's interiors, including very smart-looking fixtures and fittings; it's one of so many Vietnamese hostels that look too new and attractive to be scuffed up by a pair of dusty backpacker hiking boots. Sometimes the camera lies ... but not always.

The Location

Where location is concerned, this hostel ticks most of the boxes. It's within close proximity to all means of transport, both entering and departing the city, and it's an easy, forty-five-minute walk to the airport. The Cham sculpture museum and riverside views of the handsome bridges are only a short walk away. The only slight negative is the distance to the beach areas, if that is what guests have come to Da Nang for. So, it's right in the centre, but not among the cluster of other hostels attracting the sea- and beach-seekers.

Rooms and Bathrooms

If a backpacking group of friends or pair of couples are looking, this place has two ideal deluxe studios. Both accommodate a maximum of four people. The private kitchenette space and pastel-painted walls are nice extras. For cheapskates, pairs, and lone travelers, the options are a six-bed dorm; two twelve-bedders; and for the ladies, an eight-bed room. Avoid the windowless, sweatbox six-bed dorm; a fan and air conditioning do not make the atmosphere tolerable in there. Simple foam mattresses are adequate. A towel is loaned without cost for the duration of the stay. Exceptionally large under-bed lockers of solid construction are a wonderful idea, as not all the dorms have door locks. Room lighting is softer than in most hostel dorms, plus there are privacy curtains.

Bathroom facilities are sufficient in number. However, some toilet-roll holders have old excrement stains on them! There is neither a toilet nor shower on the top floor for guests in that twelve-bed dorm ... just a "shoes-off" rack with slippers provided and a large balcony. A lack of hot water showers might put some backpackers off. This hostel should remove the childish, unfunny, faded signs in the bathrooms.

Common Spaces

Unusually, this building has an inner courtyard, splitting the hostel in two. It's got nice greenery, and even a little swing. Stepping into the back half of the structure, an open-to-air common/breakfast room feels like a second tranquil space during daylight hours. You might think, where are all the other backpackers? Right next door is a luxury, outdoor restaurant catering to noisy Vietnamese diners and revelers until 11 p.m. The cigarette smoke from any hostel guests and the neighbours is very noticeable and gets funneled up the two stairwells of the hostel. Sadly, the mosquitoes have easy access to "Dorm 4" and are not easily deterred.

Summary

This place is a little bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. Part of the hostel leans towards a grander past. Those deluxe, four-person studios are worth the money. As for the dorms, the twelve-bed rooms would definitely be improved if they became ten-bed rooms. Three of the dorms are not bad. Wi-Fi strength is good throughout. The dorms are ok in general, but not in high demand. Slightly weary backpackers, in need of a couple of peaceful days off, gravitate to this hostel, maybe drawn in by the pictures of that courtyard haven. There are no pool parties here, and no happy hours; this isn't a hostel for lively, sociable times with other people.
Noodles, or fried eggs with green tea for the free breakfast is fine. The staff do not understand how to deal with a guest reporting bedbug bites!

Location and Contact

Location

• Danang Airport position is probably in city center. Just get out of the airport and go ahead at Nguyen Van Linh Street (easy to see in Da Nang map) about 1 km, you'll see Dragon Bridge. You would be in Danang center.
• From the airport to our place (114 Yen Bai, Da Nang) for 2$ by Grab Car, 3$ by taxi.
