Fauzi Azar by Abraham Hostels Reviews

Fauzi Azar Inn is by far one of our all-time favorite hostels to visit. It is set in an ancient house with high ceilings, which used to belong to a local Arab family and was eventually turned into a guesthouse. This little charming inn has history and character as well as all the modern facilities and comforts.

The Location

The guesthouse is located inside the covered market area of the Old City, in a beautiful house built in a Turkish style. The Old City is quite small and everything is within a short walking distance. The hostel even arranges a daily, free walking tour of the area. There's some awesome street food to eat on every corner. Even though this area is very charming, unless you really (really) want to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the major cities and crowds, you won't need more than a couple of days to explore all the sights. While this place is interesting to explore during the day, there's not much to do here after dark, so you might want to bring a good book.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are beautiful, and full of little artistic details -- you can really feel the history when you stay here. Some of the dorms don't even have bunk beds! The beds are soft and comfortable; the rooms have high ceilings and are full of light. There are lockers under the beds for valuables and enough space to keep your things. There are communal showers and toilets on each of the two floors of the hostel -- they're not too modern, but they are spacious, clean, and always smell good. There's also a washing machine and which guests can use to do some laundry.

Common Spaces

There are so many cute little corners where you can hang out. There is the dining area in the lobby where you can buy beer and soft drinks (even though there is no official bar). That's where breakfast is served, and it's an awesome Middle-Eastern-style breakfast where you can find pastries with herbs, marinated olives, and halva. Yummy! There is also the inner courtyard where you can chill out while enjoying the sounds of the birds and the fountains. There are additional sofas and little cute tables spread around the second floor as well, where you can even get a gorgeous view of the city.

Summary

If you're looking for a unique experience but aren't willing to compromise on quality, then this place is exactly for you! The staff are warm, friendly, and helpful -- and the place just feels like home away from home.

Bedbugs!

A lot of positive things can be said about the hostel, for me, however, all of them are outweighed by the fact that at least one of the dorms had a terrible infestation of bedbugs when I was there. Admittedly, staff made an effort to take care of the problem as soon as possible. They also paid to have our clothes laundered and reimbursed our money. I do not wish to discredit anyone and I believe that a case of bedbugs can happen to any hostel, but the infestation was so bad that I'm sure it must have gone on for weeks. I obtained 150+ bites in one night, one other fellow couldn't sleep at all due to the bugs. To make matters, worse the manager was really rude about it and kept insisting that it was one of us who brought the bugs in although, firstly, every corner of the room was infested, and, secondly, we all came from different hostels all over Israel. Although I found the place clean in general, the fact that the infestation could become this bad must be due to inappropriate hygiene.

Description

The Fauzi Azar Inn is the best starting-off point for touring the Galilee & Nazareth. The Inn is a 200 years Arab Mansion located at the heart of the market quarters of Nazareth, a short distance from the Central Bus Station and the Basilica of the Annunciation.

Lonely Planet 2007:
"For independent travelers, it's one of the highlights of a stay in the Galilee. A light filled lounge room with arched windows, marble floors and frescoed ceiling looks out over the city, while in a traditional downstairs courtyard a cozy cushion area is a great place to swap tales... Colourful Nazareth is no longer just a christian pit stop. Its rambling old city, bustling market and sophisticaed eating scene make it great base for touring major sites of the Galilee"
