The Billabong Guesthouse is in Kampot, Cambodia. It is a guesthouse with a dorm, rather than a hostel. Guests can enjoy a meal at the restaurant and free private parking on site.

The Location

The Guesthouse is centrally located, about ten minutes' walk from where most of the buses from other towns in Cambodia, including Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, arrive. It is about half an hour's walk, or a seven-minute tuk tuk ride, from the train station, and four blocks from the river. It is situated on Highway 3, which is a busy road. However, little of the noise from this road penetrates the guest rooms or dorms, since they are set sufficiently far back from the road. It is relatively easy to reach attractions, such as the local mountains, on a rented motorbike from the hostel.

Because of the guesthouse's central location, many shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance. The night market and the Durian roundabout are about four blocks away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The single dorm is located in an attic space, with a wooden floor and roof. The ten beds are arranged in five double bunks. Each bed has its own mosquito net, which is an important precaution in this part of Cambodia. In addition, each guest has a small locker. The dorm is cleaned daily. Some guests find the dorm uncomfortably hot without air conditioning.

The bathroom has a basic shower, toilet, and basin. The communal facilities are cleaned daily.

The private rooms in this hotel are basic but fairly clean, and each has an en suite bathroom with a simple shower, toilet, and basin.

Common Spaces

The best feature of the guesthouse is its common area. It has a year-round outdoor pool with a swim-up bar. There is also a pool table, numerous chairs and tables, and some mats to lie on. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly without being rowdy. The bar serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and reasonable food until mid-evening. The bar doubles as a reception area.

Summary

The Billabong Guesthouse is a good value accommodation option in Kampot. The accommodation is average, or slightly better than average, but the common areas are exceptional. There is reliable Wi-Fi throughout the property. The guesthouse also offers motorbike hire, visa/passport service, and onward bus tickets to destinations both within Cambodia and internationally.
