Sunset Homestay is very small, but it makes up for this with character, friendliness, and cleanliness.
The Location
The entrance to Sunset Homestay on Jalan Hill is along a concrete walkway above an area with lots of warungs (food outlets) and some shops. It is just a short walk down the hill to the riverside and there are many places to eat and drink very close by. Access to the hostel is with an electronic card, although reception is manned around the clock, so there are no issues with security.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This hostel is tiny but don’t let that put you off. Everything that you need is here (apart from a free breakfast), and the staff are all extremely helpful and friendly.
There is just one mixed dormitory with twenty-one beds. These beds are in little pods set into the wall and are an awesome three tiers high with ladders up to the top row. Each pod has a curtain for privacy, a charging point, and a reading light. Mattresses are comfortable, and whilst you will be given a small blanket, you can ask for a nice, thick quilt if you feel the cold in the night. The dorm has good air conditioning and the entire hostel is kept spotlessly clean.
There are two toilets and three hot-water showers. Shower gel and towels are provided and there are hooks for you to hang your belongings. There is also a hairdryer and racks where you can hang your damp towels and the hostel also provides a laundry service.
Lockers are provided for your valuables (not your rucksack) and a key is provided in exchange for a deposit. There is not much space in the dorm but somehow it all fits. The dorm is generally quiet at night with little outside noise to bother guests.
Common Spaces
Reception is small, but it has a couple of soft sofas. There is a dining table and chairs inside the dorm and also a tiny kitchen with a microwave and a kettle and plenty of bowls, plates, and cutlery. Breakfast is not provided, but there are many places to eat close by. Tea and coffee are provided all day and the Wi-Fi is excellent. Outside on the covered terrace, there are several tables and chairs. Snacks and cold drinks -- as well as small items such as toothbrushes or rain capes -- can be purchased here.
Summary
Staff will lock your bags away in a secure place if you wish to visit any of the National Parks overnight and (for a small fee) will also print out boarding passes or booking forms.
