Convenient location, clean, but no atmosphere
Stayed here for over a week. Very pleasant and friendly staff. Very large rooms but no common room worth a mention and also no kitchen. But you can wash your clothes and make tea in the small room where the staff hangs out. The place itself felt very safe, my dorm mates were wonderful, and while the area is very convenient, it felt a bit unsafe being close a large bus terminal (train and bus stations in Ukraine tend to attract unsavory characters). Overall, I would recommend it to anyone looking for discount (however, at $28/night, not cheap) accommodations in Kiev. If you are a female traveling alone, use caution and usual common sense if coming back alone at night time.
Okay, good staff, but not fun
I stayed here from 9 March to 11 March 2008. The staff are great and will do a lot to help you. The facilities are also clean and reliable, but when I was there, they did a pesticide/toxic cleaning. Not the safest thing and they were sure to kick us out. However, there are a lot of drunks around there. Out of three people at the hostel, I was the only who was not an alcoholic.
Hostel Yaroslav is a little out of the centre of Kiev -- but close to Kontraktova Ploscha metro station. Staying out of the centre allows you to experience more of authentic Kiev and this part of the Podil area can be one of the most exciting parts of any visit to Kiev.
The hostel itself is located in a courtyard off Yaroslavska street -- it is not well marked but there is a painted youth hostel symbol painted on the archway leading to the courtyard. It is a small hostel with only three rooms but they are kept clean. It is important to make reservations in advance because it can get full quickly. HI cardholders get a discount so you should carefully check how much you owe if you make a reservation in U.S. dollars and it is converted to hryvnias to make sure you don’t pay too much.
The facilities work although it can take a while for the hot water to flow first thing in the morning. The reception is staffed 24 hours a day although speaking in English can be a little hit and miss at times. Nonetheless, the staff are helpful in making suggestions where to go in Kiev to see the important sights.
There is no kitchen but there is an excellent Russian self-service restaurant near the metro station -- the staff can direct you. There you can have a gigantic breakfast of Ukrainian and Russian specialities for a few euros. Another highlight of the area is having a drink with local people -- whether standing around outside nearby the metro station or at one of the taverns near the metro station if it is rainy. The area gets packed with people on their way home at about 7:30 p.m. and is a great social occasion.
