Mdumbi is well set up for budget travelers, as there are a number of places offering hostel-style dorm accommodation, and Vukani Backpackers is the cheapest and most basic hostel located right in the heart of Tshani village.
Sitting right by the dirt road that cuts through Tshani village on its way to the beach, you can't miss this place. It sits on a ridge above the estuary with great views of it and the Indian Ocean where whales can be seen in season. The beach is just a ten-minute walk away and there are a couple of local shops almost next door.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This very basic place is for those penny pinchers or for travelers wanting a more authentic rural South African village experience. The rooms are in round, mud-hut style in keeping with the village, except for one long building that houses three of the double rooms and looks directly out over the estuary. There are two dorms, one of eight beds and one of ten beds. The dorms are rustic but ok, and the mattresses are a little thin, but the beds are very cheap. The common showers are gas powered, so hot water should be available when there is no electricity and there are candles and paraffin lamps in the rooms in case of power outages, but they do have a generator. There are no power points in the dorms.
The common kitchen is large and bright, but doesn't have too many pots and pans and other utensils. There are two gas rings only; there's no toaster or microwave and just one fridge. The kitchen also has two tables with chairs where you can eat, and there is a small room off the kitchen with a charging station for your electrical devices.
If you want to be in the heart if Tshani village life, then this fits the bill with the associated rustic lifestyle. The beds are very cheap and there is a local bar and small restaurant just down the road. If you want to self-cater, bring everything with you as the small local shops only stock very basic provisions and the nearest supermarket is around sixty kilometers away. There are no keys for the dorm huts; the unlocked doors are potentially a security issue. Vukani is run and owned by a local family and is a useful fall-back, if the other places are full.
